257340 Pte. Aloysius Dennis "Ally" Murphy Australian Imperial Force 2/4th Battalion from:Cootamundra Ally Murphy joined the AIF during October 1939 at a small country town of Cootamundra. He marched in during the same month and was initially based at Liverpool where he was officially taken on strength in November that year. In March of 1940 he was shipped to Greece where he as captured on 13th of April 1941 while taking part in Rear guard action. The Germans had bypassed the defenders and occupied the area in the rear of their positions. After having been taken prisoner and over the next few years was transferred to various Stalag camps including AFW 3011, AFW 3014, Stalag 18D, 18B,and finally XV111A. After the defeat of Germany he arrived in London in May 1945. Following his demobilization Ally spoke very little of his time as a prisoner however later research indicated that he kept the Germans on their toes.
