My uncle Robert Whyte (my grandfather's nephew) in the Royal Armoured Corps, attached to the 1st East Riding Yeomanry.
He was killed, aged 20, when the tank he was in took a direct hit from German artillery during the first morning of Operation Charnwood, the Anglo-Canadian offensive aimed at liberating Caen from German control.
