In May 1940, during the BEF withdrawal to Dunkirk, John Tolan was captured at St. Valery and subsequently interned at Stalag 9C in Bad Sulza, Thuringia, Germany. There, he worked at two salt mines, Kraja and Merkers. He was liberated from Stalag 9C in April 1945.
