Stvd3. Sidney Gallon
British Army 1046th Port Operating Company Royal Engineers
from:Reading
Father, Sidney Gallon was a Royal Engineer with 1026th Port Operating Company. His Company was part of 21st Army Group (Monty's Army Group) for 1944 and 1945. Father came ashore just behind 47 (Royal Marine) Commando who took the only working port captured during this phase of the invasion. They achieved this on D Day + 1. The place was Port En Bessin. They'd landed on Gold Beach and marched around the headland. Port En Bessin was used to land the first fuel pipelines taken from ships moored offshore before PLUTO (Pipe-Lines Under the Ocean) became operational. Port En Bessin remained the only port captured for some months.
