259418 Lt. Lionel George Pitman MID. British Army Pioneer Corps (d.31st Dec 1944) I never knew my paternal grandfather, Lionel Pitman I wish I had met him. The only story I remember from my childhood was that he was mentioned twice in despatches. At the tender age of about 7, I thought they meant the Great War. My father, his eldest son, said that to be mentioned once was heroic, to be mentioned twice was bloody stupid, he meant it with the deepest admiration and respect. I have found a photograph of his burial site which has moved me more than I ever could have imagined.
