Ronald Low's aircraft, Lancaster bomber, Serial No. W4138 took off 16th of September 1942 at RAF Wigsley, part of a force of 369 aircraft tasked to attack Essen. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed near Willich, approximately 8km SSE of Krefeld. The crew of 7 were killed.
All the crew were initially buried at Krefeld-Bochum cemetery but have since been relocated to the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. At the time of the loss, the aircraft had accumulated a total of 41.40 hours on its airframe.
