Sapper Frederick George Grainger
British Army 665th Artisan Work Company Royal Engineers
from:Grimsby
(d.21st Jun 1940)
Frederick Grainger was my father’s father. His date of birth was 15th January 1893. In 1939, prior to the war, he was a lumper on the fish docks. He was the husband of Alice Mary Catherine Grainger they lived at 6 Hart Street, Cleethorpes. He died 21st of June 1940, aged 47, at Folkstone Race Course, Westerhanger, Stanford Road and was buried on 26th of June 1940.
I’m genuinely curious about how and where he died as it seems quite strange, it being a race course. Dad never spoke about his father and it was quite by accident that we discovered that there is a headstone in the cemetery for him not far from where my Dad was laid to rest.
