260596 Cpl. Jonathan Walker British Army 9th Btn. Manchester Regiment from:Ashton-Under-Lyne, Manchester On Friday, 1st of September 1939, Jonathan Walker was called up to the 9th Battalion, Manchester Regiment (TA) ranking as a corporal. He was based at Slyne Camp and believed to have trained away every two weeks, one being at Abergavenny. His battalion mobilised in 1939 to France with the BEF. In 1940, they engaged in heavy fighting around Arras, which was virtually surrounded by the enemy and was later abandoned. His battalion then moved on to the beaches of Dunkirk, this is where we believe he was captured and had an injury to his eye. He was taken to Stalag XXB in Marienberg, Poland. He was kept as a prisoner of war for 5 years. During his time as a POW, he was sent to work for a family on farm, with whom who he started to get on. He was liberated by American soldiers during a forced march and returned back to England. After being cleaned up and re-kitted and health-checked, he returned home on a Friday afternoon in May 1945 with his bag on his back.
