Dorothy May Shemilt
Womens Land Army
from:Stoke-on-Trent
Dorothy Shemilt joined the Land Army circa 1942 when she was 18 years old. She was based in the Bobbington area of Staffordshire, close to where RAF servicemen were training for Bomber Command.
There was a dance organized in the village one evening. Although she was not keen on going, she was persuaded by her friend to go with her. That is where she met her future husband, they married in April 1946. Her first child, a daughter, was born in October 1947. Sadly, one week earlier, her husband lost his life in an air disaster near Mautby Church, Caister, Norfolk.
Dorothy remarried in July 1951 and had 4 more daughters. She died in December 1989 at age 65.
