Able Sea. Marcus Columba Monaghan
Royal Navy HMS Viscount
from:47 Church St., Bangor, Co. Down
I wish to remember my uncle Marcus Monaghan. He joined the Royal Navy in March 1938 aged 17. He started on surface ships, but during the war switched to a T-Class submarine operating in the Mediterranean. All his family are long dead, and as his 68 year old nephew, I have his medals and only one picture of him, in his naval uniform. He served on the destroyer HMS Viscount, which sank three U-boats. As a submariner, he was depth-charged three times, so he saw things from both perspectives. I just want the opportunity to say that I shall never forget him, nor cease to value the contribution he and thousands of young men made to preserving our way of life and freedoms.
