Fireman. George Corlett

No. 26 Fire Force National Fire Service

from:Harrowby Road, Birkenhead

George Corlett was one of many who risked their own lives in order to save others. When the air raid sirens went off, he would wrap up his son in a blanket and carry him down to the air raid shelter, and then go down to where he was needed. He was often gone for days at a time without seeing his home or family in that time. He spent the war years digging through rubble, saving folk, and fighting the terrible fires caused in the Blitz. He was based mostly down by the docks. The Mersey was a very busy place with ships everywhere. Some ships carried bombs and weaponry for the war effort. It was one of the most dangerous areas to be during the war. He was a very brave man who risked everything in order to protect others. These men should have been honoured and recognised for what they did. Every single one of them.
