PO. Alfred John Rose

Royal Navy HMS Auckland

from:Peterborough

Alfred Rose served as an ASDIC operator on HMS Auckland. When the ship was sunk 20 nautical miles from Tobruk on 24th of June 1941, he was one of the 162 survivors who were rescued by the Australian sloop HMAS Parramatta.

The following is a post-script to a poem "A Ship of England" he penned around 1941 whilst he was serving: 'As HMS Auckland sank deep in the Sea, The survivors were floating in thick oil and debris, Some 162 souls were pulled from this gunk and matter, Thank goodness for the Aussies in HMAS Parramatta'.
