John Shrigley was born in the Parish of Lostock, Bolton. He enlisted on the 2nd of February 1943 giving his trade on enlistment as Assembley and Machinist. His Height was 5ft.9.3/4.ins. Weight 137.1/2 lbs. with a chest when fully expanded of 34ins. Complexion is recorded as Fresh Eyes. Brown. Hair. Brown. Distinctive marks:- Birth mark above right ankle. 08.07.1943. Blood Group O or 1V.

In 1946 he had inoculations appear to be indicative of possible year of fracture to skull, which occurred following a kick to head whilst diving to get a loose ball during a Rugby game whilst based in Johore. Metal Plate fitted to left side of head, then sent to Darjeeling for convalescence.
