Spr. John Statham
British Army 505th Field Coy. Royal Engineers
from:Newcastle upon Tyne
Jack Statham, my Grandfather, was in the Western Desert with 505th Field Company, Royal Engineers and was reported missing on 29th of June 1942.
He was recorded as a Prisoner of War in Italy at PG70 Monturano (Parma).
On 11th of January 1944 he was listed as in a Neutral County (which we know to be Switzerland as he escaped there, at great hardship) and was recorded as back in the UK on 23rd of October 1944.
In typical fashion for his generation of men, he never breathed a word about any of this.
It came to light when a Swiss family who cared for him traced him through the Red Cross to ask after him, which came as a bit of a surprise to his family!
