Clifford Ewert James Johnson
Auxiliary Fire Service
from:Southampton
My father, Cliff Johnson, tried to join up immediately war was declared.
He had a particular Regiment in mind. which refused him because he was half an inch too short for their requirements! (Well, it was very early days they became less fussy later!)
He immediately applied to join the Auxiliary Fire Service, as he felt certain that Southampton Docks would be a target for the Luftwaffe.
He was correct of course, we saw very little of him, particularly in the Blitz weeks of 1940.
My uncle, Sidney Donohoe, was a docker, who returned to his home at the end of one blitz night. He raised my father's arm and said 'This man saved my life tonight' neither man ever recounted any more of this story.
