Frederick James Eagles
Auxiliary Fire Service
from:Davyhulme
Fred Eagles worked for Metropolitan Vickers in Trafford Park, Manchester as a foreman. His was a reserved occupation and, as he was not able to enlist, he chose to join the Auxiliary Fire Service helping put out fires resulting from the bombing of Trafford Park. He told us the story of how he and his fellow engineers were sent up to Barrow in Furness in order to install motors on the deck of a warship. Time was tight and they were told that if they had not completed the installation before the tide was right for the vessel to set sail, they would have to go out with it into a theatre of war.
They did manage to finish the job and get off the vessel before it sailed.
