Pte. Albert James "Bob" Sweetland

British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps

from:Battersea, London

My great uncle, Albert Sweetland, was held at Stalag 18A Prisoner of War Camp as PoW Number 7656, during WW2. I believe he was there from 1942 through to 1945. He served with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.

Albert was born 5th of June in Clapham, London to John Thomas Sweetland, himself a former Royal Highlander, and Martha Jane Murison. He was the 5th of 10 children. He lost his eldest brother Jock in 1918 at the Somme, and his youngest brother Fred in WW2 in Ghana 1943. The family lived in and around Savona Place, Clapham. He married Violet Noll, they had 3 children and emigrated to Australia in 1951 He died July 1990 in South Australia aged 85 and is buried at Enfield Memorial Park
