Sgt. Alexander Spence Evans
Royal Air Force
from:Liverpool
My Uncle Alex Evans's plane took a hit over Germany early in 1944. He was injured with shrapnel wounds. His Canadian fellow crew members decided to eject him from the plane so strapped his parachute onto him. He was then captured by the German forces and taken to a POW camp.
He first appears in records as arriving 24th of April 1944 at Stalag Luft 6 from Dulag Luft.
He was then kept in Stalag 357 until repatriation home to Liverpool. His name appears several times in documents recording his detention. His POW number being 3536.
As we understand it the aircraft he was in crashed with the loss of the entire Canadian crew. We have a photograph of him with this crew. His wounds were treated by German doctors although he suffered pain in his legs throughout his life as some shrapnel remained. Whilst being held his name was mentioned more than once on broadcasts by Lord Haw Haw and it was said he was 'crying for his mother'. So cruel. An endearing family man, much loved. He died in 1992.
