Frank Cowling enlisted in the Home Guard on 5th of May 1943, three weeks before his 16th birthday. He lived in Whitton Lincolnshire and worked at Bishopthorpe Farm near Whitton.
He was discharged on 31st of December 1944 when the Home Guard was stood down.
In 1945 he enlisted in the regular army and served with the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards with the BAOR and as Sergeant in Korea where he was Mentioned in Dispatches for his conduct when his unit was subject to heavy mortar and shell fire.
