2Lt. Sydney Frederick Kendall
Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve HMS King Alfred
from:Leicester
Syd Kendall joined the RNVR as an ordinary seaman (trained as a signalman) in 1940 and his first posting was aboard the converted P & O Liner Ranpura.
He saw his first year of service on North Atlantic Convoy escort duties from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Syd was invalided during that year with pneumonia and spent some time ashore on convalescent leave.
Whilst he was in sick bay he wrote of seeing more exotic scenery and this leads me to believe that HMS Ranpura was detailed to go to Bermuda as part of her escort duties.
Syd was selected for officer training and he was sent next to HMS King Alfred to gain a commission as a Temporary Second Lieutenant.
He subsequently became Commanding Officer (Temporary Lieutenant) of No. 1140 Harbour Defence Motor Launch based at Ardrishaig in Scotland.
He was married in 1942 and retired from the RNVR at the end of the war.
He died in 1986.
