Samuel Rutherford Wallace

On 20th of June 1942, Samuel Wallace transferred from the Royal Ulster Rifles to the Royal Corps of Signals 47th (London) Division, where he became an OWL (Operator Wireless and Line).
He was based in the the UK in Reading, Brighton and the Isle of Wight until June 1944.
Although Sam did not participate in the D-Day Normandy landings on 6th of June 1944, he was part of the second wave of the British Expeditionary Force.
On 25th of June 1944, Sam sailed with his unit to Nazi occupied France to join the Allies in the fight to liberate Europe.
He also fought and served in Germany as part of the British Army of the Rhine forces under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.
It was in Germany that Sam took part in the liberation of Belsen concentration camp on 15th of April 1945, finally returning to England for good on 14th of January 1946.
On his Notification of Impending Release document, which was signed on 2nd Jan 1946 in Germany, Sam's conduct is described as Exemplary. A very reliable, willing worker. Trustworthy and capable to organise.
