500580 Lance Sgt. Sidney Hare Army 2nd Btn. North Staffordshire Rgt. After leaving the Merchant Navy where my dad was serving on the Blue Star Line to South America, he joined the East Surrey regiment before being transfered to the North Staffs. He saw action in North Africa (First Army) and Italy (Sicily and Anzio). He was captured at Anzio after heavy hand-to-hand fighting. The battalion had over 600 men killed in action. My father was eventually marched and transported to the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag 357. At the end of the war he served in several other almalgamated regiments before coming back home to Custom House, Canning Town, London.
