Capt George Gerald "Jerry" Rowland Infantry
Little details are known other than George Rowland was in the company of two other men, one of whom was an American Army Sergeant, when he was captured by the Germans. Because he was an officer, Jerry was separated from the other men and transported to Dulag 12. He was treated for a bullet wound to his chest and his head. He escaped once but was swiftly recaptured because of his wounds and poor health. He was later liberated. He was reported a prisoner on 16th of December 1944, and was reported free on 23rd of November 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.Danielle M. Avery
1st Lt. Scott Andrew Briley 545th Squadron 384th Bomber Group
From the after action report of the lost plane and crew.About 20 min from the bombing target at Schweinfurt, Germany on 13th of April 1944 at 13.54 in the afternoon, the B-17 formation came under attack by German FW 190 fighter planes. Lt Scott Briley was the pilot of B-17 42-97233, flying his 13th mission, when his plane caught fire and exploded. He and another crewman fought the fire while the rest of the crew either jumped or were sucked out of the airplane. One man was badly wounded in the face and was thrown out by Lt Briley, but all 10 men were able to deploy their parachutes. Lt Briley observed several of his men being picked up by Red Cross ambulances. He and his left waist gunner, SSgt James W McClain, were on the loose for 5 days prior to capture by the enemy.
Lt Briley was first sent to Stalag 17-B and later moved to Poland. He was liberated from Dulag Luft Grosstychow Dulag 12 in June 1945.

Tech Sgt. Daniel J Burke
Daniel Burke was one of my dad's best friends. Burkie (as told to me by my dad) bailed of a B-17 and was captured by a German officer who was riding in a motorcycle sidecar. From there he was sent to Dulag Luft 12, and lost a great deal of body weight there during internment. He was repatriated, married, and lived a long life around Butler, PA. I have an early personal memory of Burkie cutting my hair with manual Army surplus clippers circa 1960, and I think my dad paid him a dime for that. I saw him occasionally over the years, and he always struck me as handy, thoughtful, and soft-spoken. Burkie had a son, Danny, and a daughter, Eileen, who graduated from Penn State University and the U of P School of Veterinary Medicine.Bob Hammond
