Sea. Ernest Ebeneezer "Wiggy" Collis HMS Anson

I have been trying for years to find out what newsreel I saw when I was around 5 years old of the HMS Anson being inspected. I cannot remember by whom; it could have been King George or Montgomery. As the camera went along the rows of sailors it came to my Father, Ernest Collis. I was in a cinema with my Dad's sister in Ponders End Middlesex. I cannot explain how excited I was as I had not seen him for a long time. I am now 81 and would really love to see that newsreel once more.

Able Sea. Alfred Henry Rutter HMS Anson

Alfred Henry Rutter

My grandfather Alfred Rutter served aboard HMS Anson from the 2nd of June 1942 until the 13th of August 1943. He took part in the Russian convoys and said it was so cold that everyone wanted off the ship. When he spoke to an officer about leaving the ship, he was asked why he wanted to leave. His reply was that he wanted to become a diver. The officer replied with, that is a new excuse, I will grant your transfer. On the 19th of December 1943, my grandfather reported to HMS Dolphin to start his diver training.

Steven Eke

Marine. James Leslie Proudfoot 41st Battalion

My father James Proudfoot served on battleships throughout WW2. Firstly HMS Resolution at the battles of Oran and Dakar, later on HMS Anson on Arctic convoys. At the end of the war he was present at the surrender of the Japanese in Hong Kong.

Jeffrey James Proudfoot

CPO. Leslie Nelson Richards HMS Anson

Leslie Richards served with the Royal Navy I have my dad's certificate of service from 14th of December 1940 to the end of 1943 he served in HMS Pembroke, HMS Elfin, HMS Dolphin and HMS Anson. On 26th of December 1943, he was promoted to Sub Lieutenant, and I have no records from then on to the end of the war.

Elspeth R Grogan

Gnr. Thomas William "Pat" Kirkwood HMS Anson

My father, Thomas William Kirkwood, joined the Royal Navy to get away from the poverty in which he was brought up. He always stated that he joined because of the promise of a new pair of boots and three square meals a day. He trained as a gunner at the gunnery school on Whale Island and went on to serve on corvettes and other craft before joining HMS Anson.

He took part in a crossing the line event on an Artic convoy, becoming a "blue nose". He also took part in other convoys to Malta, Gibraltar and North Africa. He took part in the Normandy Landings/invasion, as well as Operation Pedestal.

He finished his naval career as a gunnery instructor at the Royal Naval Gunnery School, Whale Island in 1955. After his service he took a post as a storekeeper, then a shop owner before passing away in 1997.
