L/Sea. Thomas Doak HMS Domett
Tommy Doak joined HMS Domett as a Gunner in Boston USA on 20th of September 1943 and spent 19 months on board. He took part in over 12 convoys across the North Atlantic, including two Arctic runs to/from Murmansk. During his period in the Arctic the Domett also undertook mine-sweeping activities and Tommy remembered the bitterly cold freezing conditions when he and other crew members had to break-off the build-up of ice to prevent the ship becoming top-heavy. He also used to recall the regular depth-charging of U-Boats and the dangers that that presented if the charges went off too close to the ship.Joe Doak
Able Sea. Thomas Doak HMS Domett
My father, Tommy Doak, was based at HMS Saker (Asbury Park) during August and September 1943. He was stationed there in order to prepare and launch HMS Domett, one of the Captain-Class Frigates provided by the USA on a Lease-Lend basis. He advised on the fitting (gunnery aspects) and joined the ship on its launch, taking it down to Bermuda for its sea trials.Joe Doak
Able Sea. Henry Frederick James Hawkins HMS Domett
Fred Hawkins served in HMS Domett.Michael Hawkins
Stwd. Percy Raymond Linsey LST.420 (d.7th Nov 1944)
I have been researching my uncle Percy Linsey who died in active service on the 7th of November 1944. He was travelling to the Walcheren Islands on LST420. As they were trying to land in heavy seas it became impossible. So they were instructed to return to England. As they were leaving Walcheren, unfortunately, they hit a mine and the craft broke up.I have had quite a good response over the last few years. However I have come to a standstill. I was just looking on this website and spotted all the Royal Arthur pictures. I don't know if my uncle is on any of the pictures. I would be gratefull for any copies of any group photos.
My uncle was Percy Raymond Linsey, he served on: HMS Royal Arthur from 4th of May 1943, HMS DrakeII from 8th June 1943, HMS LakerII from 20th August 1943, HMS Caroline, HMS Domett from 20 September 1943 and LST 420 until 7th of November 1944.
Any other information would also be helpful and appreciated.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
