    25th Annversary

  • 1st of September 2024 marks 25 years since the launch of the Wartime Memories Project. Thanks to everyone who has supported us over this time.
  • The Wartime Memories Project has been running for 25 years. If you would like to support us, a donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated, annually we need to raise enough funds to pay for our web hosting and admin or this site will vanish from the web.
  • 18th Dec 2024 - Please note we currently have a huge backlog of submitted material, our volunteers are working through this as quickly as possible and all names, stories and photos will be added to the site. If you have already submitted a story to the site and your UID reference number is higher than 265120 your information is still in the queue, please do not resubmit, we are working through them as quickly as possible.

Want to find out more about your relative's service? Want to know what life was like during the War? Our Library contains an ever growing number diary entries, personal letters and other documents, most transcribed into plain text.




Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Able Sea. Geoffrey Charles "Bill" Bayley HMS Pembroke HMS Quebec HMS Copra HMS Ganges

My dad, Geoffrey Bayley joined the Royal Navy at 18, on 17th of August 1942. His first ship was HMS Ganges, then he went to HMS Pembroke for a couple of weeks. He went on to have three more postings with the Pembroke, in between those dates he also served on six more ships, HMS Copra, HMS Rajah and HMS Quebec were amongst them. left the Royal Navy 30th of June 1946. Dad was very proud of the Royal Navy and being part of the War effort. The information I have given is from his Certificate of Service. His Port Division was Chatham.

ERA4. Frederick George Adams HMS Wildfire

My father, Frederick Adams joined the Royal Navy on 1st of March 1943 for the duration of hostilities and attended HMS Wildfire at Chatham, training as an Articifer. From 29th of May 1943 he was sent to Queenborough pier, Isle of Sheppy, for minesweeper duties at HMS Wildfire and then with HMS St Tudno until 17th of December 1945. After this he was transferred back to HMS Pembroke at Chatham. He Joined HMS Rajah a Lend Lease carrier on 19th of January 1946 and embarked on a world tour to repatriate Prisoners of War and Logistics. He was released from the Royal Navy on 26th of August 1946.
