CPO. Arthur Leslie "Jeff" Jeffries HMS Resolution

My father, Arthur Jeffries served in the Royal Navy from 23rd of October 1924 until he was medically discharged on 2nd of February 1942. He served on Battle ships and Heavy Cruisers mainly in the Mediterranean Fleet. He served on the HMS Royal Sovereign from 17th Jan 1938 until April 1940 (I think) when he was posted to HMS Resolution on which he served until it was torpedoed by the Vichy French submarine Beveziers on 25th of September 1940 where he was injured which eventually lead to his discharge from the service. He also served on HMS Valiant, Royal Oak and HMS Sussex.

Marine. James Leslie Proudfoot 41st Battalion

My father James Proudfoot served on battleships throughout WW2. Firstly HMS Resolution at the battles of Oran and Dakar, later on HMS Anson on Arctic convoys. At the end of the war he was present at the surrender of the Japanese in Hong Kong.

Jeffrey James Proudfoot

CPO. Harold Wilkinson HMS. Liverpool

Harold Wilkinson signed up for the Royal Navy on 5th June 1928 for 12 years. He was due to come out in 1940 but as War broke out in 1939 he was kept in service for the duration. He rose from the Rank of Stoker 2nd Class to Petty Officer Stoker at time of de-mob in 1945. He ended up serving 17 years for which he was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal.

My father remembers a story my Grandmother told of how when Harold was aboard HMS Liverpool they were Torpedoed and the bow was badly damaged so had to sail astern (backward) to Alexandra fo repairs, I believe the attack came from Italian Torpedo Planes? Later he was on Atlantic crossing convoy duties and then in Home waters where he ended his time with the Royal Navy.

During the war he served on H.M.S. Liverpool. 1938 - 1941, HMS. Resolution. 1941 - 1941, HMS. Calpe. 1941 - 1942, at shore bases 1942 - 1943, HMS. Goodall. 1945 - 1944 and HMS. Vindictive. 1944 - 1945. He never earned any Bravery or Gallantry Medals but was a hero all the same, as were all who served.

Andy Wilkinson

Ldg.Stoker J. Arthur Gill HMS Nelson

Arthur Gill was my uncle and I have come into possession of his service record from his joining in September 1933 and training on HMS Champion, through his service on HMS Resolution, Challenger and Hebe. He served on Nelson from around 1940 until he was discharged on 1 September 1945 in Portsmouth, so it looks like he wasn't on board during the surrender of Japan on 2 September but could have seen plenty of action during the time he was on board. What heroes all these men were. Sometime after the war he returned to Sutton with his wife, Gladys, who was from Somerset. They had no children and he died round about 1982. If anyone has any recollections I would be interested.
