Stwd. Derek Edward Jones HMS Repulse
Derek Jones joined the RN in September 1939. He was drafted to HMS Repulse and was aboard her when it was sunk by the Japanese off Singapore on 10th of December 1941. He joined HMS Endeavour in Colombo in 1941 and was with her during the surveying of the Red Sea of that year. He saw the sale of the Endeavour and her decommissioning.Ian Edward Jones
PO. Frederick William Northmore HMS Repulse
My father, Frederick Northmore, served in the Royal Navy in WW2. Born 1921, he joined the Navy as a boy in 1937. Dad served on HMS Repulse; MV Ulster Queen. HMS Orion, HMS Nile, HMS Dulverton, HMS Nile (Sphinx), HMS Birmingham and HMS Forth until his discharge in 1962. Unfortunately for me any medals he may have been presented with have been lost. Dad died in 1985.Diane Hardy
Able Sea. Harry Gurney HMS Repulse
Harry Gurney was my lovely father. He was serving as AB on HMS Repulse when it was attacked and sunk by the Japanese on 10th of December 1941. He worked down in the engine room, but on that fateful day he was called up onto deck, for what reason I do not know, but that call saved him, as all his mates he worked alongside in the engine room perished. He was in the water for many, many hours, clinging onto wood from the wreckage. He was picked up by the Australian Navy, and was taken to HMS Sultan on the 11th December until the 18th December. My father, like many others, never spoke to me about his time during the war. I only know the above from other family members who lived through that time. He never really talked about it to my late mother either. Sadly he died relatively young aged 55 years in 1973. He was from a naval family, his father William Samuel Gurney was a Chief Shipwright and was awarded the DSM for bravery. My father's older brother, William Edwin Gurney continued to serve in the Royal Navy and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. My late father worked in industry following the war.Patricia Cairns
Stkr1. Albert William Reynolds HMS Drake
My dad, Albert Reynolds, was a humble man and very proud to have served in the Royal Navy. He used to tell us stories that happened while serving our great country - matelots on tour. He is sadly missed but never forgotten. I am trying to find more information on where he served and what service medals he was awarded. If you have any information please contact me.The day I came home and said that I have signed up and joined the military, he was so proud. Then I said, not the Navy, dad, The Royal Green Jackets. His reply was "bog trotter" but he was still very proud of me.
Gary Reynolds
Stoker 1/Cl. Bertram Wood DSM HMS Ark Royal (d.1942)
My grandfather, Bertram Wood DSM, served in the Royal Navy from 1924 until April 1942, when he was killed. He served in HMS Ark Royal, HMS Royal Sovereign, HMS Pembroke, HMS Chatham, HMS Repulse, HMS Renown, HMS Ramillies, HMS Valiant, HMS Pegasus, HMS Ajax and HMS Havock.Carol Broomfield
Stkr. Harold Siddall HMS Repulse
My dad, Harold Siddall, was held in Arbeitslager 2780A. He was captured on Crete. 2780A was a work camp in Pasing, which is a suburb of Munich. They were employed repairing train tracks, building drains and moving goods between trains at the station. You can read my Dad's account at http://www.naval-history.net/WW2MemoirAndSo00.htmBarbara Roche
Stkr. Thomas Webster HMS Repulse
My uncle Tom Webster was on HMS Repulse which had docked in Mombasa. He, along with some others, were transferred to HMS Ceres on which he served until 1944. Then he served on HMS Zealous until the end of the war. Repulse was sunk by the Japanese air force.
Henry William Farrell HMS Repulse
Henry William Farrell was born in 1916 and enlisted in 1936. He lived in Plymouth, Devon. He was a Royal Marine on HMS Repulse when it was sunk by a Japanese aerial attack off Malaya on 10th December 1941 with the loss of 513 men. It seems that speculation still surrounds the subsequent actions of the Japanese pilots as they did not interfere with the rescue of survivors. The rescuing destroyers took them to Singapore naval base. Shortly after the sinking, the remainder of Marines from HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales, which was also sunk, merged forces with remnants of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, becoming known as the Plymouth Argylls. They took part in a series of land actions against the Japanese. They were ill prepared for tropical warfare and without air-cover so it was a mission doomed from the onset. Subsequently on February 15th 1942, the Argylls were led by a piper from Tyarsell Park Singapore, into 3 and a half years incarceration.Henry was held in the flowing camps: Changi, Havelock Road, Kinkaseki, Hindato, Non Pladuk and No 17 Fukuoka
