262518_John James Lenihan_HMS Duke of York_his Pacific Star medal

262518_John James Lenihan_HMS Duke of York_his Atlantic Star medal

This was my grandfather, who served at HMS Drake from 1943 to his discharge in 1946. He was on HMS Duke of York when the Japanese surrendered. We have a lot of documents and medals. My son is working on a family history.

Sea. Raymond William Kenney HMS Duke of York

Raymond Kenny enlisted in the Royal Navy on 2nd of February 1942 and did his basic training at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, Cornwall. His last ship was HMS Duke of York. He was in Tokyo Bay for the surrender of Japan, and it is believed that he was one of the guards who escorted the Japanese surrender party to the USS Missouri.

Robert Crawford

Sub-Lt. Harold Edward Ford HMS Duke of York

My father, Harold Ford, served on Arctic convoys. He was on HMS Duke of York when she and other naval units sank the German battleship Scharnhorst on Boxing Day 26th of December 1943 during the Battle of the North Cape.

Elizabeth Ford

ERA4. Edmund Ward HMS Duke of York

The certificate of service that I have shows that my father, Edmund Ward, served in the Royal Navy. This shows he was a volunteer joining on 6th of March 1941. He was in HMS Drake from 6 March to 2 July 1941, then again 24 March to 5 April 1945, and once again 1 August 1945 - 17 March 1946. My father's rank from what I remember was Petty Officer and he worked in the engine rooms of these ships, he was a Fitter & Turner. He also served on HMS Dunluce Castle and the HMS Duke of York. He did not speak much of his war time experiences, except to say how frightening it was to be battened down in the engine room.

My father was fortunate to survive World War 2, he returned home to marry my mother Patricia. He passed away at the age of 80 in Featherston, New Zealand.
