HMS Urge



   HMS Urge, N 17 was built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. She was launched on the 19th of August 1940. HMS Urge left Malta on 27th April 1942 for Alexandria. On the 29th of April she was spotted off Ras-el-Hilal, Lybia by an Italian aircraft which dropped depth charges. HMS Urge was reported overdue on on 6th of May 1942 when she failed to arrive at Alexandria, presumed lost with all hands.

  • 1st of September 2024 marks 25 years since the launch of the Wartime Memories Project. Thanks to everyone who has supported us over this time.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Ldg.Stok. Samuel Cornelius Wilkes HMS Urge (d.6th May 1942)

On 27th of April 1942, Samuel Wilkes' vessel, the submarine HMS Urge, sank after hitting a mine off the island of Malta.

  • HMS St Angelo (SC) 18th July 1941; (HM Sub Urge) 16th September 1941. (Sub lost 28th April 1942); (SC) 16th November 1941.
  • HMS Talbot (HMS Sub Una) 28th February 1943.
  • HMS Dolphin (S/M's) 2nd March 1943.
  • HMS Ambrose (S/M's) 14th May 1943.
  • HMS Ambrose (HM Sub Sea Dog) 12th October 1943.
  • HMS Forth (HM Sea Dog) 15th August 1944; (S/M's) 29th November 1944; (HM Sub Sleuth) 10th January 1945.
  • HMS Maidstone (HM Sub Sleuth) 12 January 1945.
  • HMS Dolphin (HM Sub Sleuth) 1st October 194; (S/M's) 22nd February 1946 Released Class A.

He was Mentioned in Dispatches: for Distinguished Service (HM Sub Unseen) No. 1 1st June 1943 - Parchment. and for Distinguished Service (HM Sub Sleuth) No. 2 18th December 1945 - Parchment.

Frank William Lomax



Sub.Lt. Brian N. T. Lloyd HMS Malaya

MS Malaya in convoy from the UK to the Med. in 1942. 82 mear misses.

My late uncle, Brian N.T.Lloyd, joined the Royal Navy prior to WW2 and served as a Midshipman and Sub Lieutenant on HMS Malaya. In 1941 he was in Fort St Angelo, Malta where he joined the submarine HMS Urge for a mission to Sciliy to pick up a secret agent. Alas, he never returned from that mission.
