Want to find out more about your relative's service? Want to know what life was like during the War? Our Library contains an ever growing number diary entries, personal letters and other documents, most transcribed into plain text.
Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.

Able Sea. John Charles Pitchforth HMS Cabot
John Pitchforth was my Father. He served in the Royal Navy from 17th of November 1941 to 30th of May 1946. He served on HMS Drake on 5 occasions, also also served on HMS Chitral, Ganges, Cabot, Ferret, Caroline, Dommett, Louis and Curzon, in that time and was awarded the 1939 to 1945 Star, The Africa Medal, The Italy Medal,The F and C Medal and the War Medal. He was released Class A to shore in 1946.Helen Taylor
Able Sea. Tecwyn James Jones HMS Dauntless
On his service record it states Tecwyn Jones was on HMS Victory from 29/07/1943 to 04/11/1943, he started of at Glendower a Butlins Holiday Camp on 07/02/1941 to 04/07/1941, and then moved on to the President 111 on 15/07/1941 to May 1943, and then on to Afrikander 0/05/1943 to 25/05/1943, and then onto HMS Dauntless 26/05/1943 to 21/07/1943, and then on to Victory dates as above, the next ship he went on we can not read the name on his service record properly but it starts with a S or G? 04/11/1943 TO 22/02/1944, and then onto Caroline (HMS Inman) 23/02/1944 to 31/08/1944, the next ship is also difficult to read it looks like Ferret 01/09/1944 to 26/07/1945, then back on to HMS Victory 27/07/1945 to 26/09/1945, and his final ship HMS Raven 27/09/1945 to 06/02/1946 when we assume he was demobbed.Philip Wilson
John Charles Wilkinson HMS Kestrel
I have found my father's certificate of service and his first ship is named HMS Raleigh. He was on this from 13 October 1943 to 21st Dec 1943. Jack Wilkinson was aged 17 years 7 month when he enlisted. He then went on:
- HMS Drake from 12th Dec to 7th Jan 1944.
- HMS Kestrel 8th Jan 1944 to 15th May 1944.
- HMS Drake 16th May 1944 to 25th May 1944.
- HMS Ferret
- HMS Pembroke
- HMS Buchian ?
- HMS Golden Hand
- HMS Dullisk Cove,
- HMS Manxman
- HMS Martello and finally
- HMS Eskimo from 22nd Jan 1947 to 19th May 1947

Ldg.Wren. Lily Lees
Lily Lees was a Leading Wren in the Royal Navy. She completed her training at Mill Hill and after finishing her first posting achieved her rank of Leading Wren. She spoke often of her postings, the friends she made and her role as a writer having served in a number of Royal Navy posts including:HMS Bruce, HMS Drake2, HMS Ferret, HMS Jackdaw and HMS Pembroke.At the date of writing, Lily Lees is 93 years old, but sadly very ill in a nursing home. Personal effects covering Lily's naval career have been recently re-discovered and the information shared.

PO. Robert Benjamin Robinson HMS Pembroke
My grandad, Robert Robinson, was in the Royal Navy from 1933 until discharged in 1945. He was sunk twice. He was mostly on board HMS Pembroke but also served on HMS Apollo, HMS Calliope, HMS Ferret, HMS Valiant, HMS Ramillies, HMS Dolphin, HMS St Angelo, HMS London and HMS Asphodel from his hand written certificate of service. Bob had scarring on his lungs from the bronchitis caused by his time adrift after being sunk and this contributed to his death in 1995.Lisa Robinson
L/Stok. Reginald Steven Millergill HMS Philoctetes
Reginald Millergill started his service on Royal Arthur, from 4th Feb 1941 to 8th of May 1941, then HMS Victory from 8th May 1941 to 30th of June 1946, when he was then Released To Shore in Class A . On 10th of March 1944 on HMS Philoctetes awarded Aux W A. On 24th of Dec 1942 he was transferred to HMS Ferret (Cells) for Creating a disturbance.
- HMS Sultan - 11 July 1945 to (Date not recorded).
- HMS Victory - (Date not recorded) - to 25 Nov 1945
- Passage - 26 Nov 1945 -
- HMS Boxer - 27 Nov 1945 to 23 Jan 1946
- HMS Victory - 24 Jan 1946 to 10 Feb 1946
- HMS Formidable - 11 Feb 1946 to (Date not recorded)
- HMS Victory - (Date not recorded) to 14 Feb 1946
- HMS Whelp - 15 Feb 1946 to 19 April 1946
- HMS Victory - 20 Apr 1946 to 30 June 1946

Skr2. Robert David King HMS Ferret
My Dad, Bob King was in the Royal Navy from 17 October 1944 age 17 until 31 December 1947, stoker 2nd class. He was on HMS Royal Arthur, HMS Duke (Frobisher Division), HMS Imperieuse II, HMS Victory, HMS Roberts, HMS Ferret, HMS Montserrat, HMS St George, HMS Plover, HMS Vernon, HMS Zodiac, HMS Tuscan and HMS Resource. He survived the war and passed away in 2015.
CPO Stkr. William James Price HMS Pembroke
My grandfather, Bill Price joined HMS Pembroke at the age of 18 in 1920. He served on many ships during his navy career.Loraine Price Hines

During WW2, Russell Barnes served in HMS Eurylus, HMS Osprey, HMS Sea Hawk, HMS Hornet, HMS St Christopher, HMS Aggressive, HMS Wildfire, HMS St Angelo, HMS Ferret, HMS Sea Eagle and HMS Pembroke.Jane Richardson
Stkr. John William "Jack" Hill HMS Royal Arthur
My dad was at HMS Royal Arthur from 12th March 1941 to 17th April 1941. He went on to serve on HMS Victory, HMS Rockingham, HMS Ferret, HMS Quebec and HMS Copra. He was a stoker 1st and 2nd class. He service records only go up to 1943, so I don't know which other ships he was on after that, although I remember him talking about HMS Keppel.Sally Redden
