HMS Palomares

HMS Palomares started life as a cargo ship, built in 1938 by Doxford at Sunderland and owned by MacAndrew & Co. trading to the Med. usually carrying fruit. 1,896 tons 306' x 45' powered by a single shaft Diesel engine and capable of16 knots. In August 1940 she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and fitted with 3 x twin 4", 2 x quad. 2 pdrs and 4 x 20 mm guns and rated as an anti-aircraft ship. In December 1942 she was converted to a fighter-direction ship, fitted with radar to direct fighter aircraft. As an A/A ship she served on Arctic convoys, including the infamous PQ.17 in June/July 1942 and the landings in North Africa (November 1942). During this she was hit by a bomb which killed several men and caused considerable damage. As a F/D ship she took part in the Salerno landings (September 1943), the Anzio landings (January 1944). During this she was damaged when she hit a mine while being towed to Naples for repair. In 1945 it was intended that she go to the Pacific, but this was cancelled. She was returned to her merchant owners in 1946.

Gnr. Lawrence Henry Gumbley HMS Palomares

My father Lawrence Gumbley served on HMS Palomares between 1943-1944.

CPO. John Hayes HMS Palomaris

John Hayes 1985

John Hayes (Jack)

John Hayes was my Father. As a child I listened to many stories my Father told me re the PQ17 Convoy to Russia. He served on the HMS Palomares. As he grew older he tended not to want to talk about his life and experiences in the Royal Navy during WWII.

When the war ended my Father joined up as a Firefighter for Chester city Fire Service. Anyone would have thought, that spending the previous 6 years fighting a war and serving on the horrendous Arctic Convoy, that he would have chosen a less dangerous career to pursue in peacetime. Well he climbed ladders and fought fires and served his time until retirement with the Fire service.

William Cooper HMS Palomares

My grandfather, Bill Cooper, served on HMS Palomares and I'm searching for any information and, hopefully, some pictures for my family.
