Wiremn. Peter Huntley Jose HMS Rodney

The Wiremen, Peter Jose in middle

Wireman Peter Jose on HMS Churchill

Peter Jose served as a wireman on HMS Churchill, HMS Drake, HMS Defince and HMS Rodney.

A/Ldg.Sea. John Leggate HMS Capetown

My uncle, John Leggate, served onboard the Capetown from Jan 1941 'till June 41. He had be moved from HMS Carthage to HMS Capetown. After the torpedo attack on HMS Capetown he was then posted on board the battleship HMS Rodney in Jan 9143 'till May 1945. By this time he was Petty Officer and finished as Commissioned Gunner in 1947 to 1954 having been in the Navy from 1938. He passed away in Greenock in 1982.

Stuart Leggate

Sigmn. William David Frank Slowley HMS Cormorant

William Slowley was my father. I have looked up his war record as part of my family history interest. He never spoke much about the war, I guess because he had moved on since demob in 1945. He was a good father, and after he left the Navy he worked hard as a printer (at home, part time) and as a signalman at Avonmouth docks until his death in 1962. He was very bright and won a scholarship to grammar school, but because his mother (widowed when he was 9) couldn't afford the uniform he was not able to go, instead he joined the Navy and served in both World Wars (he served on HMS Rigorous during WW1). He knew Morse code like it was his natural language, built single valve radios for me as a child, etc. I now guess the Navy saw his intelligence and talent and think he was part of the secret communications system, especially when he served on HMS Rodney (which was involved in sinking the Bismarck) in WW2.

John Slowley

PO. Reginald Leonard Reeves HMS Furious

My late father served in the Royal Navy from 1933-48. Pre-war, he served aboard HMS Carlisle and HMS Apollo. From 1938 to 1942, he was aboard HMS Rodney which took part in the hunt for the Bismarck. He then transferred to the escort carrier HMS Furious, where he was a torpedo gunner's mate, and saw service in the Mediterranean and Arctic theatres. Following the withdrawal of HMS Furious from service in late 1944, he was an instructor at various Royal Navy stations until his demobilisation in 1948.

AbleSea. Raymond Thomas "Tiger" Welsh HMS Rodney

After completing his training on the newly commissioned Raleigh, the Drake, the Defiance and the Cabbala, Ray Welsh was consigned to the HMS Rodney on Xmas day 1941 and was de-mobbed (class A) on St Valentines day 1946.

Ray died of kidney failure at the tender age of 29. He sired three children in the time he had of which, of course, I am one. Whenever I think my life is going tough I think of how my father spent his youth. Serving bravely his country from the age of 19 to 25. What was I doing? living the good life he fought for. I never knew him but I have a deep appreciation for his life and his soul. Thank you father.

Kenneth Welsh

Joseph Charles Sanson HMS Nelson

My dad, Joe Sanson was on Nelson, Valiant, Endevour, Rodney these were just a few, he boxed for the navy served in Scotland, Malta and in dry dock in Simon Town SA.
