World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

HMS Ramillies

HMS Ramillies, a Revenge Class, was launched on the 12th September 1916 having been built by Wm Beardmore & Company Dalmuir. During the Second World War HMS Ramillies was involved in the bombardment of Bardia, the Battle of Cape Teudada and the bombardment of Diego Saurez (Madagascar), where she was torpedoed by Japanese midget submarine on the 30th May 1942. After repairs she took part in the bombardment of German positions during D-Day between Arrowmanche and Caen, as well as bombardment of Southern France.

The ship was scrapped at Cairn Ryan in 1948. Outside the Imperial War Museum stand two 15-inch guns, one of which is from Ramillies and the other from Resolution.

William Humphreys HMS Ramillies

I am writing on behalf of my Grandad, William Humphreys. He served on HMS Ramillies during the war. I have noticed Arthur Popejoy's name on the crew list, he was my Grandad's best friend throughout this time and has obviously lost contact since. Does anyone have any information about Arthur? Any contacts at all would be very much appreciated.

Simon Humphreys

William Melland HMS Ramilies

My Grandfather served on the Ramillies during its tour in the Indian Ocean, his name was William (Bill) Melland, I know very little about his service as he never talked about it when he was alive, I am currently attempting to aquire his service details from the admiralty, easier said than done.

Robert and George Robinson

My grandad, Robert Robinson, was in the Royal Navy from 1933 until discharged in 1945. He was sunk twice. He was mostly on board HMS Pembroke but also served on HMS Apollo, HMS Calliope, HMS Ferret, HMS Valiant, HMS Ramillies, HMS Dolphin, HMS St Angelo, HMS London and HMS Asphodel from his hand written certificate of service. Bob had scarring on his lungs from the bronchitis caused by his time adrift after being sunk and this contributed to his death in 1995.

P.O. John Douglas Warwick HMS Ramillies

I only knew John Warwick for short time, all I can tell you is that he told me that he served on H.M.S. Ramillies during WW2.

Peter Edward Cox

Stok. John Rafferty HMS Ramilles

My dad John Rafferty served time in WW2. He did not talk about much. I can understand it now as it must have been a horrible time for a young man but to all brave and all heroes to this country God bless them He was awarded the Burma star, Atlantic star, 39-45 star and the France & Germany star.

Margaret Ross

CPO. Frederick John Howard Bidgood HMS Ramilies

My dad, Frederick Bidgood was in a band called the Wreckateers playing guitar. Whilst in Canada he stayed with family who had a 78 disc recorder I have copies of the music disc they made.

Whilst my father was working in Victory Barracks in Portsmouth he was given permission for my baptism to take place on board HMS Victory in Captain Hardy's cabin with the use of the ship bell as a font.

John Bidgood

Stkr1. George Chapman Cosstick HMS Ramillies

George Cosstick was on HMS Ramillies for the entire War. He saw action many times on board this great ship. The longest action of course was D-Day, when Ramillies was involved in the Shelling of the French Coast and targets inland, up to about 20 miles. He spoke in little detail of events, but enough to let one know of the tough time often had by the Ship and the Crew. He did speak of his mates on board like Sid Horner and Bert Shepard and wondered how they got on, back in civilian life. George died in 1994 aged 86.

Richard Cosstick

Robert May HMS Ramillies

My grandfather, Robert May was on HMS Ramillies, that is all I know of his naval service. I have a photo of her titled Marius Bar, Toulon, which belonged to my grandfather.

David Mckenna

My grandfather, Bertram Wood DSM, served in the Royal Navy from 1924 until April 1942, when he was killed. He served in HMS Ark Royal, HMS Royal Sovereign, HMS Pembroke, HMS Chatham, HMS Repulse, HMS Renown, HMS Ramillies, HMS Valiant, HMS Pegasus, HMS Ajax and HMS Havock.

Carol Broomfield

L/.Sea William Humphreys HMS Ramillies

I served aboard HMS Ramillies from 1941 to 1945.

William Humphries

PO. Cyril John Benny HMS Dorsetshire

My father, Cyril John "Jack" Benny, served on HMS Dorsetshire from sometime prior to the Bismark action until the sinking in April 1942, a non-swimmer he was assisted to some floating wreckage until rescued with the other survivors. I am not quite sure what happened next but he did spend a fair amount of 1942/43 in East Africa, Kenya/Mombasa before returning to England late 1943 or early 1944 to join the Ramilies in time to be involved with the shelling of northern France on D Day. He passed away on September 21st 1996, without ever telling his full story.

Nick Benny

Stoker William Edward Melland HMS Ramillies

I believe my grandfather, William Melland served upon the HMS Ramillies, hearing that he'd been sunk on HMS Iron Duke previously, as a very gallant Stoker and only being of roughly 3 survivors of the sinking, he was rewarded the duty of chief Stoker upon HMS Ramillies serving the Queen and country and surviving. He died in 1982 aged 82, in my opinion, he was a magnificent man that helped us all in our British freedom from Hitler. R.I.P all that gave so much.
