SS Avonwood



12th Dec 1942 SS Avonwood lost  The steamship SS Avonwood registered in Middlesbrough, was lying with a convoy off Lowestoft on 12th of December 1942, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German E-boat. Thirteen men were killed. Capt. Wood was among the survivors.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. 2nd Off. Edward John Mahoney SS Avonwood Merchant Navy (d.12th Dec 1942)

Edward Mahoney served as Second Officer on SS Avonwood.

Gnr. Francis Garside Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery

Frank Garside was a Royal Artillery Gunner on the SS Avonwood when it was torpedoed and sunk by an E Boat on the 12th Dec 1942 while part of convoy FN98. The ship now lies about 3 miles off Lowestoft. He was rescued by the HMS St Mellons, a rescue tug.

Able Sea. John William Shreeve SS Avonwood (d.14th Dec 1942)

Jack Shreeve served on the SS Avonwood which was in convoy off Lowestoft when it was hit by a torpedo. The SS Ethylene rescued thirteen survivors, six from the Norwegian vessel Marianne, and six from the Avonwood. Jack was one of those rescued. Unfortunately, he subsequently collapsed and died on board the Ethylene. There is a copy of the statement made by Master of the Ethylene, Lawrence Bruce Anderson, giving details of the circumstances. John William was taken to the Royal Jubilee Infirmary, North Shields where he was certified dead.

He is named on the Merchant Seamen's Memorial in London and buried in Tooting Cemetery. He was 21 years old.

M/Rm.Boy. John Brown Flowdy SS Avonwood (d.12th Dec 1942)

John Brown Flowdy who died aged 17 was born in Jarrow in 1924, the son of Robert Miller M. and Jane Flowdy (nee Rutherford) of Jarrow.

John is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.
