Alexander Bain . ARP from Leeds
My Grandfather, Alexander Bain served with the 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. I still have his campaign and Victory medals and regimental cap badge. He suffered from mustard gas but went on to work in the LNER railways in York and was a very active member of the ARP in WW2 and St Johns Ambulance between the wars. He went on to live to nearly 80 but never talked about his experiences to me as a child, sure this is true of many veterans.

St.Sgt. Willis Earl Bain . United States Army 117th Infantry Regiment from Fayetteville, Tenn.
My stepfather, Willis Bain served with 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division (Old Hickory) and was captured on 7th of August 1944 at the Battle of Mortain protecting Hill 314.
He was forced to march a long way before being herded onto boxcars and sent nearly 900 miles to Stalag III-C arriving in September 1944. He escaped with two other men. (I do not know the names of the men.) They went south through the terrible snow over the Alps and along the Adriatic Sea of Italy arriving in Naples, Italy in late March 1945. He sailed on the Mariposa and arrived in Boston, Mass. on 8th of April 1945. I would like to know the names of the men in his barracks and/or the names of the two men escaped with on the night of New Year's 1944/45.

Sam Bainbridge . British Army
Among my late mother's papers was the attached photo sent to her in Burscough, Lancs, by Sam Bainbridge, who is presumably one of the men in the picture. The reverse gives the references 5999, K2780, Stalag VII A. My family does not remember Sam, but can anyone explain why two of the faces have been excised? I think I remember my mother saying that's how it arrived, presumably censored - but why?

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
