World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Pvt. Drolan Chandler .     United States Army Air Corps Hq & Hq Sqdn 27th Bomb Gr. (L) V Bomb Cmd   from Alabama

Eric Chandler DFM.     Royal Air Force 82 Squadron

Eric Chandler was a gunner flying in Blenheim bombers with 82 Squadron from RAF Watton. Later, when 82 sqn. was sent to Malta his aircraft was badly damaged by flak and the pilot (Taff Watkins)was badly wounded in the legs. Although not trained as a pilot, navigator James Sargent managed to fly the aircraft back to base (Luqa) and Taff Watkins regained enough consciousness to land safely. For this, Taff Watkins was awarded the DSO and Eric Chandler and James Sargent were both awarded the DFM.

Spr. George Chandler .     British Army 226th Field Coy. Royal Engineers (d.4th March 1945)

George Chandler was the son of William E. and Eva V. Chandler. He was 25 when he died and is buried in the Hochkirch Parish Cemetery in Germany.

P/O. Gordon Emery Chandler .     Royal Air Force 264 Squadron   from Toddington, Bedfordshire

(d.13th May 1940)

Pilot Officer (Pilot) Gordon Chandler was the son of Alfred Leonard and Mary Gertrude Chandler of Toddington, Bedfordshire. He was aged 20 when he died and is buried in the Made-en-Drimmelen Protestant Churchyard in Noord-Brabant, Netherlands

Sgt. Lewell Freeman Chandler .     United States Army I Co. 31st Inf Regt

P/O Robert "Ted" Chandler .     Royal Air Force 150 Sqdn.   from Canada

My father was a Canadian pilot at Snaith with RAF 150 Squadron from October to December 1941, flying Wellingtons (R1414, L7870, X9816, R1216). He had a crash on take-off and was hospitalised and didn't return to service in Canada until 1943. He died in 1971. His crew were Sgt Hutchinson, Sgt Kay, Sgt Quinn, Sgt Young, Sgt Brown and F/Lt Roy.

Sidney Chandler .     British Army

My grandad, Sidney Chandler was in the 8th army desert rats, my dad says that he was at Dunkirk and in Africa. I would be so grateful if I could find out were he went, as he wouldn't speak much about the war. I want to be able to tell my boy what his great grandad did during the war and why we owe the service men and women so much.

Cpl. Stanley Frank Chandler .     British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps

A/Sgt. Sydney Stanley Chandler MM..     Canadian Army 1st Btn. Royal Highland Regiment Black Watch   from Oshawa, Ontario

Sydney Chandler married my maternal grandmother in the 1950s after the death of her then husband Douglas Lawerence (who I believe served in the same unit) My Uncle had a photocopy of the the award letter.

On 26th of February 1945 during the initial phase of the assault South of Calgar, Germany Sgt Chandlar (then a Corporal) was in charge of a section of the First Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. His company's objective was a key position on the escarpment South of the town of Calgar. Early in the attack this company came under very heavy fire, the company commander was wounded and Sergeant Chandler's platoon commander killed. This Non-commissioned Officer immediately took command of the platoon, reorganised it and maintained the assault to the objective, there co-ordinating the consolidation in spite of heavy shell and mortar fire. Again on 28th February 1945 this Non Commissioned Officer took command of his platoon when its Commander was wounded during a wood clearing operation in the Hochwald Forest. The platoon was held up by well dug in snipers and a machine gun nest and subjected to intense shell and mortar fire. Realizing the gravity of the situation Sergeant Chandler quickly organized his platoon and with one section rushed and knocked out this enemy position. On the objective this Non-commissioned Officer by his own example so inspired his men that when it appeared that valuable ground would have to be abandoned under extreme pressure repeated counter beaten off and the position held. Sgt Chandler by his good judgement, leadership and cool indifference to danger throughout this whole operation contributed very materially to the success of his company's task and his conduct was an inspiration to all ranks.

He was awarded an immediate Military Medal. I no longer know the whereabouts of the certificate and some photographs as he was moved to a home and items were removed by person unknown.

Cpl. Ronaud J. Chandonnet .     US Army Battery B 172nd Field Artillery Battalion

Douglas Channell .

Douglas Channell was interned at Oflag 7b during WW2.

Sgt B W Channing .     RAFVR 9 Squadron

Emily Elizabeth Chant .     Women's Land Army   from Kingston Upon Hull

Our Mam, Emily Chant was in the Land Army based at Sherburn. I remember her telling us stories about her days on the land. I always remember her best friend was Nora Bennet. I have one photograph of mam as one of a group of Land Army Girls, I would love to see more photos of when mam was a girl, does anyone have any?

Sea. Frederick James Chant .     Royal Navy HMS Pembroke   from Axminster, Devon

Frederick Chant served as an Ordnance Mechanic.

Mable Eva Chant .     Womens Land Army   from Melbourne Port

My Mother Mable Chant served with the Women's Land Army and had an affair with an American soldier at a Wilbourne dance. On returning to her home, my Grandad chucked her out of the house. Hence I was born in Taunton nine months later. Finally, my grandfather forgave her when he saw me in my pram. My grandfather also chucked my auntie out because she married a Polish Jew

Henry Chantler .     Air Raid Protection   from Liverpool

I’ve been finding out bits and pieces about my Granddad's Military Service. Harry Chantler started out in the Liverpool Regiment then the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and finally the Machine Gun Corps. I only know bits of family history. I know he was shot, got shrapnel in his eye and couldn’t eat greasy food because of effects of gas. He was invalided out at some point and sent to Scotland where he learned how to embroider but he went back.

He was a very funny, nice and humorous person, always telling jokes and liked to watch boxing matches, always had minty sweets in his pockets for us all when he visited us. He wasn’t very tall, probably about 5”7 something like that.

In WW2 he was an Air Raid Protection. I’ve some photos of a couple of soldiers, I presume were friends, but I don’t know who they are. None of him in uniform. I don’t know where he fought and I’d like to find out and maybe visit to pay respects. He had a little cry in front of the telly every Armistice Sunday, I think he lost quite a few friends.

Pvt. David Nunez Chapa .     United States Army A Bty. 1st Btn. 200th Coast Artillery Corps   from Alamo, Texas

Sqd.Ldr. William Frederick Chape .     Royal Air Force 269 Squadron

My father Bill Chape served with 269 Squadron. The Squadron captured the only German U Boat during WW2. It was guarded from the air by various aircraft whilst it was brought into port with the crew on deck. My parents migrated to Perth, Western Australia in 1955.

GA Chaplin .     British Army Royal Armoured Corps

GA Chaplin served with the Royal Armoured Corps British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

(d.3rd June 1944)

Flight Sergeant (Pilot) GeorgeChaplin was the Son of James William and Lily Eliza Chaplin of Grays, Essex. He was 22 when he died and is buried in the Malabo Cemetery, Bioko, Equatorial Guinea.

Joyce Mary Chaplin .     Womens Land Army   from Westcliff-on-sea Essex

I worked in Waltham Abbey Essex growing tomatoes and often wonder if there is still anyone out there that worked at Sapsfords Nursery in Sewardstone Road. Would be good to hear from them. From there I worked on farms at Shopland, near Benfleet and lived in a hostel in Kenneth Road. It was a very enjoyable job and I enjoy telling my grandchildren all the things we had to do. Joyce

PO. Robert Henry Chaplin .     Royal Navy HMS Pembroke   from Barkingside

Bob Chaplin was my dad, the father of 3 daughters. He loved telling us his war stories from which I gleaned that he enjoyed his war. He should have had sons who would have been more enthralled with his war stories than we were.
