Pte. Norman Sydney Camsey .     British Army 7th Btn. Yorkshire Regiment   from Sunderland

Sid Camsey served with the 7th Btn. Green Howards.

Pte. William Henry "Lad" Canary .     Canadian Army Black Watch   from Glace Bay, NS

My Dad, William Canary was very proud of his service. He saw a lot of action in Europe but he did not talk much about it. He used the Sten, Bren and Piet guns. He was wounded in France and the telegram that my Mom received said "blast to the head and lungs". He was also hit in the shin with a brick from a blast by a German 88 shell, he wound up with a steel plate in his head. Doctors told my Mom that he might live for 5 years. He lived for thirty. He had a good sense of humor and laughed all the time. He told me a funny story once about how it was always hard for him to get over the tall wall obstacle during training camp. In combat a German machine gun opened up on him and the other soldiers while they were out in the street. The bullets were kicking up water in the puddles all around them. The only cover was a tall wall like the one in training camp. He said that he went over that wall in 2 seconds flat.

Thomas Canavan .     British Army Northumberland Fusiliers   from Co. Durham

Tom Canavan was my grandfather. He was captured at Dunkirk and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. I have a tiny diary that he kept and also photographs taken at the camp. He sent lovely cards for my mum's birthday during these years as she was only 9 when he went away. She still has them. I think those times took their toll on him, and he died at just 64 when I was 15.

Wren Gertrude "Paddy" Canning .     Women's Royal Naval Service HMS Quebec   from Ballindrait, Lifford, Ireland

    (d.30th Jun 1942)

I would like to let you know of my Aunt Gertrude Canning in the hope that there are still some of her old "chums" with us today. We, Gertrude's family, have been looking for someone that served with her on HMS Quebec the Special Operations Training Camp in Inveraray, Scotland. Unfortunately, her time in the service,WRNS,was tragically cut short. Gertrude was coming back to her base on June 30th 1942 when she was murdered in woods close to her camp. She became the subject of a 4 day search. When her body was found in undergrowth, close to the "Marriage tree" it was discovered that she'd been shot 4 times with a .38 revolver. Her killer was never found despite a nationwide investigation and thousands of ballistic tests on revolvers. It is thought her killer was probably a casualty of the disastrous Dieppe raid.

Next June 30th my family will travel to Inveraray to dedicate a bench and brass plate to her memory on the 70th anniversary of her death. I am pleased to share this information with all. If anyone wants to read about the case, please go to the web and type,"Gertrude Canning murder". I hope to get some feedback through this and especially from a Wren, soldier, or civilian that knew her in Inveraray back in 1942. Sadly, many servicemen and women of that time have passed on, but I live in hope as they say. Gertrude's story has recently been told in the Argyll Advertiser,The Scottish Herald and The Scottish Daily Mail. Strathclyde are still treating it as a live enquiry and the case is now the subject of a review.

Wren. Gertrude "Paddy" Canning .     Women's Royal Naval Service HMS Quebec   from Donegal,Ireland

    (d.30th Jun 1942)

My late aunt Gertrude Canning was a serving Wren at the combined operations bases in Inveraray. Gertrude was stationed in Admiralty House in Inveraray and worked in the officer's mess. She was walking to her base to begin her duties after posting a letter to her father but was followed on that day and attacked in the woods. She was only 20 years old and was shot 4 times by someone who was never caught. It led to one of the most covert investigations in WW2 which resulted in the ballistic testing of thousands of Webley.38 revolvers. Her killer was thought to have perished at the disastrous Battle of Dieppe. Although my aunt was only in the service 3 months before she died, it is nice to think that she played her part in the campaign. It would be interesting to find out if anyone is still alive that remembers the case and if anyone has been told about it from an older relative. I would love to hear from anyone. The story is on the net: Gertrude Canning murder

Sgt. Arthur Cannings .     Royal Air Force 210 Squadron (d.25th March 1944)

Arthur Cannings was born in 1920, the son of George Ernest and Mary Cannings. He served in 210 Sqn, RAF. He died on 25th March 1944 in a crash 'near to a croft'. He is buried in Stockport (Willow Grove) Cemetery.

Arthur Victor Cannings .     Royal Air Force 210 Squadron

The piece I have is from my cousin Arthur Cannings: "At Sulloy Voe, Shetland Islands on the 25th of March 1944, Catalina JX210 of 210 Squadron, narrowly missed us in JX243 as it crashed beside a small croft, killing all on board.

In around 1985 I painted a watercolour of catalina FP131 and added an imaginary shetland background, including that croft. In June 2005 I attended a Squadron reunion at Stratford upon Avon, a lady named Mary was introduced, whose fiance, Bill Hurd was 2nd Pilot to F/Lt Keates. She was seeking information and was pleased to learn something of the crash. I later sent her my watercolour as an 80th Birthday present and received a full scale print in return. A remarkable fact that the small croft should prove significant after so long."

Fredrick Eric Cannings .     Royal Air Force

My cousin Fredrick Cannings served as an RAF Commando during WW2. He was part of the allied initiative 'Operation Torch' The operation commenced on November 8th 1942.

Operation Torch was the name given to the Allied invasion of French North Africa in November 1942. Operation Torch was the first time the British and Americans had jointly worked on an invasion plan together. From North Africa, the plan was to invade Sicily and then on to mainland Italy and move up the so-called “soft underbelly” of Europe. Victory in the region would also do a great deal to clear the Mediterranean Sea of Axis shipping and leave it more free for the Allies to use.

On the 9th of November, a squadron of Hurricanes flew from Gibralter and landed at Maison Blanche in Algiers, where they were fuelled and armed. Later that day, about 20 German Junkers JU88 aircraft were seen heading toward Algiers on a bombing mission . The Hurricanes were scrambled and Frederick has mentioned a ginger haired Flight Commander, who was beaten to his aircraft by another pilot and threatened what he would do to them on returning from the battle. This was probably forgotten when 18 JU88 aircraft were destroyed, by a combination of Hurricanes and Bofors guns. I would like to discover the identity of the said commander. Does anyone know?

Gerald Edward Cannings .     British Army 2nd Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders   from Coventry

Cpl. Gerald Edward Cannings .     British Army 2nd Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

    Gerald Edward Cannings

Gerald Cannings was my Dad, who volunteered to go into the Army even though he had a protected occupation as a aircraft fitter. He fought in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He landed in France on D+6 and went right though the war to Germany, where he met my Mother. He never told me a lot about the war apart from he got shot in the foot by one of his mates messing about with a gun. He got married to my Mother in Germany and lost his stripes for that! After the end of the war, they lived in Germany for 15 years, then they came back to England, to Coventry, and he went back to aircraft fitting. Later they moved down to Bournemouth, where he lived the rest of his life.

L/Sgt. Charles Henry "Chick" Cannon .     British Army 2nd Btn. Royal Scots Fusiliers   from 26 Wellington Street, Greenock

    (d.27th Nov 1946)

Charles Cannon was killed on active service in Germany on 27th Nov 1946. It is believed he had been crushed and injured when a truck carrying wooden planks or telegraph poles shed its load (or reversed into him) with the load possibly penetrating the truck cab and killing Charlie.

Charlie played the trumpet or cornet and may also have been a Fusiliers bandsman.

Quartermaster Sergeant John William "Bonnie" Cannon .     British Army Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry

I am trying to find out more about my father, QMS John Cannon during the war, I have his book with his details, he served in the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry He joined up from Father Hudson Homes in Birmingham at the age of 15 and he served for over 22 years. If anybody has any information about him I would appreciate hearing from you.

Joseph A. Cannon .     United States Army 104 Infantry - Timberwolves   from Pennsylvania

World War II Veteran. The division trained in the northwestern United States during the next two years, earning its name "Timberwolf Division" from its time in the area

Leslie William Cannon .     Royal Air Force

I am researching the life of AVM Leslie William CANNON CB, CBE. He joined the RAF as Apprentice 1920 (No.335612)(2nd entry) at RAF Cranwell. He was commissioned in 1925 (No.16166).

He served pre-WWII at Henlow, Shrewsbury, Cranwell, 440/441 Flt/FAA China Station. No.2 Sqn, No.5 Sqn India (NWF).

WWII HQ Bomber Command/No.2 Gp Bomber Command/Foulsham/Watton/Lasham/Dunsfold/21 OTU/2nd Tactical Air Force in France/Belgium/Germany (Gutersloh). No. 85 Group (Hamburg/Bad Eilsen).

Post-WWII Royal Pakistan Air Force, Air Ministry.

Any personal information or stories would be of great help. I am also trying to find his Flying Log Book and medals/decorations.

    F/Sgt. P. G. Cannon .     97 Squadron

AB Ronald William Cannon .     Royal Navy HMS Victory

F/O. Roy Albert Arthur Cannon .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 548 Squadron (d.26th Feb 1945)

Roy Cannon was the son of Frederick Henry and May Cannon. A 23-year-old Spitfire pilot, Roy was to have married his Aussie sweetheart just four days after he perished in this crash. Also killed was Cannon's intended best man, RAF Flt-Lt T.J. Cook. The aircraft in which he was a passenger, and which was believed to have been flying one of its last missions, had six American and two Royal Air Force crew on board. They are buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.

Flt.Sgt. Sidney Alfred Thomas "Shino" Cannon .     Royal Australian Air Force Air Gunner 460 Sqd.   from Fulham, London
