He escaped while in transit and returned to his unit. Later that year while fighting near the River Lamone he was captured on the 9 December 1944 and this time ended up at Moosburg Stalag VIIa POW camp until liberation.

Fus. John Alexander Creery . British Army Royal Scots Fusiliers from 34 Tyne Street
My father, John Creery, was a prisoner of war for 5 years. I have learnt that he was in Luckenwalde Camp Stalag IIIA. I remember him telling us stories about being so hungry he ate raw cabbages and raw potatoes and of finding men hanging in the toilets that couldn't take any more. I have to say none of his stories were happy ones. The only thing I found funny was someone gave him some cigarettes but he didn't smoke. So, he asked someone to try and get him some toothpaste as he was proud of his teeth and missed cleaning them. He did get some which he was glad for.
I remember my granny saying he went away a young man with lots of curly hair and came back like an old man with very little hair. He was awarded his wages on a cart by the lord mayor of his home town which was the Shankill Road, Belfast. He continued to work for the British Legion until he retired.

Cpl. Thomas Henry Creighton . British Army from Chester
lt. Crellin . Home Guard D Coy. Workington Btn.
George Edward Crellin . British Army 15th IoM Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, 129th Batte Royal Artillery from Isle of Man
My late father, George Edward Crellin was with the 129th Battery, 15th (Isle of Man) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. The 129th was raised on the IOM just before war broke out. He was one of the many soldiers and officers of the 129th captured in Crete (only 1 officer and 30 soldiers escaped capture). He eventually ended up in Germany and was in Stalag 3D from August 1941 to October 1943, then Stalag 4G from November 1943 to April 1945. During his time as a POW he was in several work parties. e.g. at a stone quarry. Along with many of his fellow Manx POWs, my father died young and probably as a result of the harsh treatment received. I would be very grateful for any further information about my father, the camps and about the liberation of Stalag 4G.

My great grandpa Kenneth Edwin Crenshaw was a pow in ww2. He is still alive and never talks about his experience. He has told me that he had to eat rats and he almost starved to death. That he used to go out on work details to farms. That he marched through a Polish winter, walking up to 30 Km a day on to near Hanover where he and his mate escaped for 3 days until the Americans broke through.

My father, Francis Cresswell served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was attached to 136 West Lancs Field Regt Royal Artillery and told a story of taking a convoy of trucks across India in 1943 when Rangoon was in Japanese hands. He was subsequently involved in the Arakan and cut off being relieved by (I think) parachutists. I can find no reference to the epic drive across India.

Cresswell-Turner . Royal Air Force 350 Sqdn.
Ernest Walter Cressweller . British Army Middlesex Regiment from Newland Road, Worthing
Ernest Walter Cressweller was my grandfather, he enlisted with the Middlesex Regement on the 2nd of Nov 1943. I know very little about his time during the war as he died before I was born aged only 34. Unfortunately, my grandmother didn't like to talk about it too much although he did not die until he left the Army. He was discharged from the Army in 1947. However, he didn't pass away until 1960 when his son, my father was only 3. It was always implied that he died as a result of the war and his death certificate basically says heart failure.
I only have 3 very small photos of him and would love to know more about him, I wonder if anyone who knew him is still around remembers anything about him.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
