Gnr. Stanley Charles Crisp . British Army 50th Coast Observation Detachment Royal Artillery from London
(d.8th Mar 1942)
My Great-Uncle Stanley Charles Crisp was a gunner of the 50th Coast Observation Detachment R.A. who died in Singapore a month after its fall in WW2. The fall of Singapore was on the 15th of February 1942, it seems he was taken to the Changi prison camp where he died on the 8th of March, just one month later and has a marked grave in the Singapore Cemetery.
Changi was one of the more notorious Japanese prisoner of war camps. So I assume he died of disease probably, however this is where I need anyone's help. Records state that he was part of 50 coast obs. Det. R.A. which I believe might be 50 Coast Observer, Detachment, Royal Artillery. He was aged 33. If anyone can help piece together his story of what his unit was, what they were doing, and what could have happened? Perhaps if there is any photos or anything please help. Thank you
H. G. Crissman . United States Air Force 454th Bomb Group from USA
I served with the 454th Bomb Group, 15th AAF, based near Cerignola, Italy from August to 27th December 1944. I was a tail-gunner on B24 `Thunder Mist' which was lost to AA fire over Bruck, Austria on our 30th mission. I was in POW camps in Frankfurt, Wetzler and Nuremburg and walked to Stalag 7a Moosburg in mid April 1945. Nuremburg had to be the worst camp in Germany (old 13d) There was no heat and little food.

I lost one-third to one-half of my body weight in four and a half months on a 700 calorie (or less) diet. I retuned to the USA on 5th June 1945.

Gnr. Reginald Critchley . British Army Royal Artillery from Manchester
Grandad, Reg Critchley, spoke a lot about two friends from the Royal Artillery in particular, Ray Lodge and Tiffy Kent. I would love to hear more about either of these two men. Here is a story as told to me by Grandad in 2001.
"I had a mate there, the gun fitter, Tiffy Kent, was a good mate of mine, and he was always joking some road. He was always having a... When we went in convoy, Tiffy, and the vehicle mechanic, went in motorbikes, up and down, see if there were any breakdowns, things like that. Well the gun never broke down because it was being towed, but the vehicles might. So Tiffy always found out... prospecting for booze outhouses, some farming... He'd nip off there, and he'd spend the next two, three hours there, and catch us up like..."
AN "and he would drive the motorbike like that?"
RC "Oh yeah. Oh he'd always find a farmhouse with a supply of er, juice there. And er, one day we'd gone up the road and turned off, to where we parked the guns. And Busty was his mate, the vehicle mechanic, and he, he was staunch tea-total. Now Tiffy was about five foot six, Busty was a good six foot. And very big too. Big with it. Very big fella in all ways... but staunch tea total, where Tiffy was a little boozer. Anyway, Busty came up to me, he said, 'you seen that little buggar like'?
'It's, er, Tiffy' I said, 'who we talking about.'
He said, 'Y'know, Tiffy. He should have been here by now.'
I said, 'he's probably found a farmhouse somewhere with a drop of juice in it for him.'
Anyhow, he er, he was over about half an hour, three quarters of an hour later, Tiffy. Rolled up on his motorbike like, with his xxxx xxxxx. 'You'll never guess,' he said to me.
I said 'I'll guess, you're bloody half cut again.'
'No, no, apart from that,' he said. 'I was going down the road and the Red Cap stopped me, military police.'
And I was like, 'we didn't see any military police, coming up here...'
'So he stopped me and said 'And where do you think you're going?'
He said, 'I'm looking for the artillery.'
He said 'Whose? Ours or theirs?'
'Ours ya daft buggar.'
He said, 'you're the daft buggar if you go any further cause the Germans are next.'
He said, 'well where's ours like?'
Told him, 'well go back about quarter of a mile, three hundred yards, and you'll see the turn off.'
SW "that was close!"
That was one of the strokes he pulled."

F/Sgt George William Osborne Crocker . Royal Air Force from Plymouth, Devon
My Father, George Crocker was mid upper & tail end gunner in Lancaster bomers, and was stationed at Scampton. My mother Gladis was also in the WAAF, and they met at RAF Scampton. My father took part in droping food on Rotterdam to the starving Dutch. I am now married to a Dutch girl from Rotterdam. Due to my father's part during and after the war with dropping food to my wife's parents, they met and gave me my loving wife Ineke. Is that something to be very gratefull for, or was it meant to be? I would like to learn more about my father's RAF career.
Flt.Sgt. George William Osborne Crocker . Royal Air Force 153 Squadron from Plymouth, Devon
My father was George William Osborne Crocker. He was an air gunner during the second world war on Ansons, Wellingtons & Lancasters. On Lancasters he was Mid Upper & Tail End Gunner. He served at Bishopscourt, Wymeswold, Worksop, Scampton & Binbrook. I have my fathers log books that tell of his raids on Germany and his crew who were sent after training to their first operation unit at 153 Squadron at RAF Scampton, his first entry being 12th March 1945.
- His crew were:
- Pilot: A. West. Pilot Officer
- Bomb Aimer: G Cutting SGT
- Navigator: Mac Millan SGT
- Engineer: H. Brooks SGT
- WOP: W. Teagle SGT
- Rear Gunner: J. Adkin SGT
- Mid Upper Gunner: G.Crocker SGT
I have dates of his raids on Nordhawsen / Lutzkendorf / Keil Canal where the Admiral Scheer was sunk on 9th April 1945, Bremen and his attack on a daylight raid on Hitlers residence Berchesgaden on 25/04/1945, with his comment " If only he was there" This gives you some background information on my dad; however the most important fact being that he dropped food on Rotterdam in Holland on 1st May 1945, at 300 feet height.
I am now married to a Dutch girl from Rotterdam, we have been together for 38 years. The dropping of food by my dad on Rotterdam saved my wife's parents who lived in Rotterdam at the time. When they met they produced my beautiful wife Ineke. So thank you dad for giving Ineke to me by your deed of dropping this food on the starving Dutch.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
