Bugler Frank Cullen was my father. He and my mother were engaged to be married when he was called up and I was born in December 1939. Because my father was killed in May, 1940 I never knew him and have not even seen a photo of him. I have always wanted to know more about my father but my mother was reluctant to talk about him as she married in 1942 and I was legally adopted by my stepfather who was a wonderful man and a good father to me.

I would be so grateful for any information about my father however small as the need to know about him is as strong as ever. I hope there is someone out there who can help.

(d.24th Dec 1944)

Peter Cullen was my uncle. Sadly I never knew him as I wasn't born until a few years after the war ended. Peter and his fellow crew members were shot down and killed on Christmas Eve 1944. He was 23 years old and had just spent some leave at home where he persuaded my grandparents to allow him to have a huge party; a premonition perhaps that this would be the last time that he would be home.

My father, William Thomas Cullen, served in 22nd Field Squadron, Royal Engineers. He was always reluctant to talk about the war, and only gave this information later in life. Other information I have found on the internet. He was injured at Tobruk. He and other wounded were being transported in a convoy of ambulances when they were ambushed by the Italians. The other wounded soldier in my father's ambulance was killed. My father was sent to the Military hospital in Parma.

Warrant Officer Graham Cullis .     Royal Air Force 102 Squadron   from S.Wales

W/O Graham Cullis, a Welshman, was a wireless operator flying in Halifax bombers with 102 Squadron based at Pocklington N. Yorks. In late 1943 or early 1944 Graham's plane was shot down over Germany and he bailed out, landing with his parachute in a tree in a wood from which he had to extricate himself. At day break he left the wood, but there was a reception party awaiting him and he was captured. He remembers being taken through Berlin on his way to a POW camp and being spat at and verbally abused by German women in the city, though fortunately no further harm befell him. He was imprisoned in Stalag Luft 1 on Germany's Baltic coast and was eventually liberated by Russian forces in May 1945. By this time his weight was down to under seven stone due to the shortage of rations at the camp as the war progressed. Graham thought that, of his plane's crew of seven ,either three or four may have survived the shooting down. After the war Grham remained in the RAF for a time and eventually died C1992. He told me his story in the 1980s.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
