World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

WA Cumming .     British Army

WA Cumming served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

William Gordon Cumming .     British Army   from Oswestry, Shropshire

These photos were taken in 1944, I know it was Cairo, my grandfather is on the far left at the back but I'd like to know what Regiment or base this was? He was William Gordon Cumming, born 1909 so actually 'old' to go to war, he wasn't called up until 1944 I believe and went to Cairo in a supplies type role. Prior to that in the UK he had been an office worker for Prudential so would have had good organisational skills. Very little is known about his wartime destinations and I would appreciate any thoughts anyone has. I know its a long shot but thought its worth a try.

F/Lt. Alexander McKay Cummings .     Royal Air Force 43 Squadron (d.11th Nov 1944)

I am doing a search for the municipality of Vigonza, a small village at nort east of Padua, about soldier dead in the area during the 2 WW, with the aim to make a book for remember them on next 25th April. Checking the municipality archive, I found a letter (see attachment) dated 11th november 1944, regarding a english pilot crashed on 11th november 1944 at 13 oclock after a fighting. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission comunicated me that in Padua War Cemetry is buried one pilot dead on 11th november 1944, that is: Casualty: Flight Lieutenant Alexander McKay Cumming, 128858

Served With: 43 Sqdn. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died: 11th November 1944, Commemorated: Padua War Cemetery, Italy Plot III. Row F. Grave 14. Additional Information: Age 21 Son of Alexander and Louisa J. Cummings, of Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Dux Medallist of Larbert Central School, 1937.

But Commonwealth War Graves Commission dont hold any information on where and how Commonwealth war casualties died. Therefore with these information about pilot Cummings I am not sure he is the pilot Im looking for, infact. He could be captured same day before and not really shot down on 11th November 1944. Looking RAF museum website I see that exists a book regarding pilots dead in 2ndWW but is not advantageous to buy it only to give some information about one pilot. I wish know if he was realy shot down in Padua area on 11th november 1944 arround 13 oclock, what fighter he used (I think it is a Spitfire IX), what shot him down and other information you can have to verify if they match with Vigonza municipality archive letter.

Sgt. Cyril Patrick Cummings .     US Army Air Corps   from Spring Green, WI

My Dad Cyril Cummings was a POW of WWII in Germany at Stalag Luft 4. He never talked about his experience there. We all knew it was too horrifying for him. Then the last year of his life he told me some horrific stories I will never forget. These just tore my heart out as he spoke. Of course their food supply was little to nothing. A family, dad, mom and young son snuck food in for them when they could. The Germans caught the family and made the POW's watch them shoot all 3 of them to death. Another time he talked about Christmas Eve. All the guys started to sing Silent Night and the Germans told them to stop but they didn't so the Germans started beating on them but they still wouldn't stop. They were beaten through the whole song but they did finish singing it completely.

I have spent several weeks on researching my dad's records and Stalag information but unfortunately not finding much. If by chance anyone reading this would recognize the names: Cyril Cummings, Bill Tate, Don Cairns, Forest Wilmouth and Charles O'Geen (as these were the men he was shot down with.) The name of the plane was San Antonio Rose, name of the crew was Oftenstein Crew, it would be a blessing to hear from you.

Sgt. William Cummings .     Army Royal Fusliers

A relative of mine, Bill Cummings who I unfortunately only knew as a very young boy, was imprisoned at Stalag 8B. To the best of my knowledge, he was recalled to the Army in 1939 having already served from 1919 in various places throughout the Empire. He was captured after Dunkirk, while trying to escape to the South of France. I know from other relatives that he was involved in several ‘mishaps’ including at a coal mine (excessive explosive in the coal face) and a saw mill (fire). I also know from my uncle who took care of his body when he passed away that he had been severely tortured. I believe he was with the Royal Fusiliers. I wish I could speak with him now, his first hand experience of history – between the wars and during the war is something that we could all learn from.

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
