Pte. James Cunningham .     British Army Cameron Highlanders   from Clydebank, Scotland

Jimmy Cunningham was my father's uncle, served in the Cameron Highlanders, 51st Division. He was captured on the 12th of June 1940 St Valery en Caux, marched to XXA, later transferred to XXB. His is POW number was 364. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Pte James Cunningham .     British Army   from Paisley

Pte. John Leslie Cunningham .     British Army 1st Btn. Suffolk Regiment   from Belfast

John Cunningham was an Ulsterman with a wife, Agnes and 4 children living in Belfast in 1939. His elder brothers Herbert and Hector had both been in the RAF in WW1, Herbert having been one of its earliest pilots flying Avro 504 bombers. At the start of WW2, perhaps under their influence, we find their 32-year-old brother John, the 10th child of the family, in the Territorial Army riding a motor-cycle, in the 4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, as near as he could be to France and the war which was approaching.

In July 1939, with a European war approaching, a degree of military chaos reigned while the 1st Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment was withdrawn home from Malta in a hurry, brought up to strength and, on 1st October, landed at Cherbourg in France to join the rest of the British Expeditionary Force help defend France, Belgium and Holland from German attack. Attached to the 1st Battalion was John Cunningham, the Territorial, with his motorcycle, and other volunteers who had come with him from the 4th Battalion which was still recruiting back in Suffolk.

The 1st Battalion became part of 8th Infantry Brigade in General Bernard Montgomery's 3rd Division (these details can be used to follow subsequent operations on line, which nine months later ended in defeat). On landing in France, the Battalion was rapidly deployed by train to St Ouen, 100 miles south-west of Paris. Full scale operations didn't actually start until 10th of May 1940 and lasted just six weeks, such was the German tactical and military dominance, especially in the handling of their armour and air support. Thus did John Leslie Cunningham end up on the beaches of Dunkirk where he was wounded on 15th of June 1940, and where he had to leave behind his motor-cycle and his much treasured violin. After his fortunate return to England by boat, he was transferred from the Suffolk Regiment to the Pioneer Corps. However, his luck didn't last as he was wounded again in UK six months later on 9th December 1940 (casualty details unknown).

As far as we know he served in the Pioneer Corps until his release after the war. But when he finally returned home to Belfast in 1946 he had contracted TB which he gave to Iris, his three-year-old daughter, who had to spend a year in hospital. He had to be isolated in a Sanatorium for more than a year. Indeed, he was not fully cured until he had a lung operation in 1953. His recovery was amazingly complete; he emigrated with most of his family to Canada where he died aged 75.

Flt.Lt. John Cunningham DFC..     Royal Air Force 115 Squadron

John Cunningham DFC was my uncle and I am in possession of all his flying history, uniform and medals. During WW2 John joined the Royal Air Force flying with 115 Squadron.

Lt. L. L. Cunningham .     Home Guard B Coy. Workington Btn.

Olive Elizabeth Cunningham .     Womens Timber Corps   from Cooks Road, Stratford, London

My mother, Olive Cunningham was a Lumber Jill during World War 2. Unfortunately I don't know too many details of her time with the Timber Corps. I believe she joined after her husband (of less than a year) Thomas Fitzpatrick was killed in action in Sicily in 1943. She was married a day after she was 20 in 1942 and widowed at 20 on 3rd of August 1943. She spent her time in either Norfolk or Suffolk and was billeted with a lovely family, who I met when I was quite young. While she was in the Timber Corps she became friends with her future sister in law, Marjorie Gaine. Marjorie went on to marry my Mum's brother, Thomas. Through Marjorie she was introduced to my father, Stanley Gaine, who was Marjorie's brother. Unfortunately my mum died fairly young, aged 50, in 1972, followed closely by my dad in 1973 (age 45). I have some photos of her in her uniform out in the fields and some of the friends she made, during what was a very difficult time for her. It's so sad I didn't get to talk or reminisce about her life but am pleased, that through her tragic loss, she met my dad and had a short but happy life with 4 children.

Robert Cunningham .     Royal Navy HMS Manchester

Robert Norval Cunningham .     Royal Canadian Air Force RAF Skellingthorpe   from USA

(d.11th May 1944)

My first cousin, Robert Norval Cunningham, felt compelled to join the armed forces in the first days of WWII. He lived in the USA, but had been born in Scotland. He joined the RCAF and shortly thereafter was sent to Skellingthorpe, England. On 11th May 1944 the Lancaster he was aboard was shot down and the entire crew killed. He was a rear gunner. We subsequently found that he was buried in a mass grave at Oostvleteern Churchyard, Belgium.

Little was known of the first Robert Norval Cunningham (for whom my cousin was named). He was killed in 1917 at the age of 39. By the strangest of coincidences, we have found that both Robert Norval Cunninghams, who sacrified their lives for world peace in two separate world wars, are buried in Belgium about 10 miles apart.

A/PO. Thomas Cunningham .     Royal Navy HMS Penelope

My father Thomas Cunningham served on HMS Penelope from 17th August 1939 to 3rd October 1943, starting as an Ordinary Seaman and working up to Acting Petty Officer.

On 13th of September 1943, securing a line whilst anchoring, my father caught his left foot in the capstan. As far as I know, he was hospitalised in America and did not rejoin the Penelope.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
