L/Bdr. Douglas Frank Curby . Australian Army Royal Australian Artillery
Sgt. Fred Curet . United States Marine Corps Mississippi
Gnr. Douglas Curl . British Army 11th Survey Regiment Royal Artillery from Liverpool
My father Douglas Curl who served as a Gunner in the 11th Survey Regiment told me of his days posted on the cliffs of Dover during the Operation to stop the V1 and V2. He believes he was one of the first soldiers to sight the dooglebug or buzz bomb whilst on duty. He stated he could see across the channel what he first thought was RAF returning on fire. He called on the wind up phone to check if RAF was in fact airborne. After about half an hour passed his unit got a call saying what ever those things are shoot them down as they are falling as bombs on our towns. My dad said they were too fast "all we could do was spray at them with AK AK anti air gun".
He later told of being involved as part of Operation Crossbow sent over to Belgium and Holland to identify the factories and posts where the missiles were being fired.

F/Lt. Richard Alexander Curle . Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve A Flight 100 Squadron from Gateshead
(d.4th March 1943)
Richard Curle was a very close friend of my father. He trained in Canada and returned to fly operations over Germany in first Wellingtons and then in Lancasters with No. 100 Squadron based at RAF Grimsby.
It was on 100 Squadron's first operational sortie (as a bomber squadron) on 4th of March 1943 that Richard and his crew failed to return. They had been sent to the Gironde Estuary in western France to drop sea mines. A month later Richard's body was recovered from the sea but no trace of the Lancaster or the rest of the crew was located. He is buried in a small cemetery on the island of D'Oleron.

D Curley. . 428 Sqd.
Sgt. Denis Curnick . Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 78 Squadron from Engcobo, Transkei, Eastern Cape, South Africa
(d.28th January 1942)
Flt.Sgt. Clifford Alfred Noel Curnock . Royal Air Force 607 Squadron from London
My father, Clifford Curnock never talked about the war and he passed away in 1985 after a long illness. Recently I found this story relating to him, taken from 607 Squadron records, in a book and thought I would share it.
Burma, 28th of April 1944 "As this tragedy occurred 607 Squadron were in action. The rest of the Squadron had arrived from Wanjing and the Squadron were at readiness by 3pm. It rained in the morning, but it cleared by afternoon and then 6 Spitfires were scrambled to intercept an aircraft making for Silchar.
The bandit was coming in from the south-east and as height was gained, a Dinah recce aircraft was spotted at 25,000 feet by Black Section, Flight Sergeant C.A.N Curnock and Flight Sergeant Townsend who were 4,000 feet above it. As the Dinah crossed in front of them from left to right the two fighters dived at it, return fire coming from the Dinah's rear gunner. Six attacks were made, Curnock firing all his ammunition and Townsend most of his. The Jap pilot weaved and dived, carried out skidding turns in his attempts to avoid the Spitfires but it was eventually left with smoke pouring from it's port engine. An Army report later observed that the Dinah was last seen losing height rapidly, with one engine smoking, towards hills 25 miles south-east of Imphal. Curnock's Spitfire, B, was slightly damaged by return fire."
Pte. Ford Beverley Curnow . British Army 1st Battalion South Lancashire Regiment from Wallasey
(d.31st May 1940)
My father Ford Curnow was born 12 July 1908 and was persuaded by his mother to join the Army Reserve in the South Lancashire Regiment to "keep an eye on Wilfred", his older brother who had already joined. There is a photograph of him with the 1st Battalion, South Lancashire Regimental Band in Sonnenberg Camp, Germany dated 1929. He married my mother Evelyn Jones on 14th October 1937 and was called up for permanent service to The Prince of Wales Volunteers on 1st September 1939. He was reported Missing in Action on 31st of May 1940, subsequently reported killed in action at Dunkirk on the same date.
Family hearsay is that his brother Wilfred passed Ford who was in a foxhole with a machine gun, and told him they were falling back. Ford's response was "it's a piece of cake". Wilfred was advised that his brother was in trouble and returned to find Ford blown to pieces. Shortly afterwards, Wilfred was invalided out of the army.
Montefiore's admirable book about Dunkirk says that some units of the British army were ordered to fight to the last man to keep the corridor open to allow the British Army to retreat to the beaches - an incredible example of self-sacrifice. It would interesting to know if Ford and Wilfred were in one of those units.
Ford left 2 daughters, and now 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren and counting. I would love to let them know the full story of Ford's heroism.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
