Tpr. Douglas Davidson DCM.. British Army 44th Btn. C Sqn. Royal Tank Regiment from Motherwell
Douglas Davidson was taken prisoner on the 1st of June 1942, near the Knightsbridge Box, during the Battle of Gazala. Within the following month he made four attempts to escape, on the first occasion away from Italians who were guarding a small number of POW sleeping in the open. Although he reached the coast, he was caught by a German patrol and returned to the camp. The following night he made a similar escape but he was again recaptured. A few days later he and six others cut the wire surrounding Durna (Derna) transit camp. Davidson separated from the others and wearing Arab clothing given to him by friendly tribesmen was within sight of British positions when his disguise was seen through by a German patrol.
On his return to camp with three other escapees he was made to face a firing squad, the execution was only stayed by Davidson's direct appeal to the Commandant. In spite of this narrow escape from death he made another attempt on reaching Benghazi camp by crawling through the wire. However he was recaptured the following morning and transferred to Italy.
At the time of the Italian armistice he was at Monteurano (Camp 70) and in accordance with instructions given by the SBO took no action on hearing the news. On the 26th September during transfer to Germany, he jumped from a train near Bologna, through a hole cut in the door of the carriage. Travelling alone to Monte San Vicino he joined a rebel group. Except for one unsuccessful attempt to cross the Maiella in November 1943 he remained with this group of Partisans until he met advancing British troops on the 6th June 1944. Although he was not an NCO Davidson was put in charge of 35 - 50 guerrillas. Other escapees have praised his courage and leadership, one officer reporting that he had a reputation for outstanding courage and daring amongst the most reckless of rebels, who had the most complete confidence in him. In addition in March 1944 it was mainly due to Davidson's efforts that 8 RAF personnel were not captured when a Fascist road block was met during a drive to a rendezvous for sea evacuation.

F/Sgt. Henry Eugene Davidson DFM.. Royal Air Force 138 Sqdn. (d.14th April 1943)
I am looking for any one that may have known my great uncle. He came down in the sea off Bournemouth. Operation Porcupine, Belgium.I would love to hear from any one with any information, stories or photos of the crew.
Update:
Your great uncle is listed in the Roll of Honour From Chorley's Bomber Comand Losses:
138 Sqdn Halifax B363 NF-T, Sgt W A Cook RNZAF, Sgt J Doy, Sgt E G Hammett, W/O R W Ward DFC, Sgt W Skelton, F/S H E Davidson DFM, F/S A E King, Sgt J R Callan, Sgt E J Kimberley.
They took off from Tempsford on operation Porcupine/Mandrill Caracal 3 and Gibbon 2 over Belgium. Presumed lost over the sea. Five are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial; the rest are buried in various cemeteries. F/S Davidson had gained his DFM while serving with 102 Sqdn, the details being published on 6 December 1940 along with those of his skipper, then P/O G L Cheshire VC who won a DSO. The joint citation paid tribute to their courage and skill in extracting their Whitley from a most hazardous situation after flak had set fire to the fuselage, particular mention being made to the fact that F/S Davidson had been severely burnt and temporarily blinded. - Bob
Update
I write to thank you for your reply and found it most interesting as this has been the only piece of information I have found. I am awaiting F/S Davidson records from the PMA. From your note I believe you refer to Leonard Cheshire. I say this as I remember my grandfather showing me Harry's Davidson's diary. My grandfather sent this to Mr Cheshire but unfortunately never had it returned.

L/Sgt. James Lewis Gerrie Davidson . British Army 1st Battalion Scots Guards from Pimlico, London
My Father, James Davidson served with the 1st Battalion Scots Guards and was taken POW at Anzio on 10th of February 1944. He was a sniper and had just shot a German major on the beach, when the water tower he was in, was stormed by German troops, he was shot in back and taken captive. He survived, but was taken to Stalag 357 which at that time was in Thorn in Poland. He was later moved to Fallingbostal.
The Family story goes that he escaped with another POW while being marched out of Fallingbostal in 1945 as the Allied front line drew closer. He only ever told my eldest brother the story and sadly he is no longer alive either, so we don't know the exact story.
His service record shows that he was in Italy 13.01.44 to 09.02.44 Taken POW (Germany) 10.02.44 to 11.05.45. Home 12.05.45
He later went on to become, what was at that time, the youngest ever Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards. He had contracted TB while a POW and never fully recovered from it. In 1953 he failed his A1 medical because of this and could not remain in the Guards, so transferred to the RASC, which he served in until 1965. It was the greatest sadness to him that he had been forced to leave the Scots Guards as he was immensely proud of serving with them, as his father had before him.
He died aged 58 in 1983. We are still trying to piece together his story, as like so many, he talked very little of his experiences. As a child I took for granted the strange star shaped scar on his shoulder blade, it was only after he died that I learnt it was a gunshot wound. He served in Malaya (Scots Guards) 25.02.50 to 23.10.50 Korea/Japan (RASC) 12.08.53 to 01.10.55 Malaya (RASC) 02.10.55 to 19.06.57 ALFCE (Fontainebleau) (RASC) 07.10.60 to 07.10.63.
Jimmy Davidson .
L/Cpl. John Alexander Davidson . British Army 4th Btn. Cameron Highlanders from Beauly, Inverness
My Late Uncle, John Davidson lived in the far north of Scotland, in a place called Belladrum Estate, a stones throw away from a village called Kiltarlity, approximately ten miles from Inverness. Until just recently I knew very little by way of his wartime exploits other than that he was a prisoner of war & he was put to work in the salt mines.
That has changed dramatically earlier today, when I made contact with someone who to my delight furnished me with some vital details to get me seriously started to find out about his time during the war. I am told he was a Lance Corporal in the 4th Camerons and was upon capture interred in a POW Camp called at Lamsdorf, Stalag 344
I would very much like to hear from anyone who knew him or who has a picture of him from his experiences.

F/Lt. Max Whitely Davidson . Royal Canadian Air Force 420 Squadron from Calgary
Max Davidson was a flight lieutenant and pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force 420 Squadron, The Snowy Owl. He flew 33 operations. They knew there was going to be a mission at noon when they would see "War on Tonight" posted with a list of the crews that would be going. They rested and had an operational meal which included a glass of milk and a real egg (as opposed to powdered eggs). They then received a briefing and were assigned flying heights, times, and routes. Most often they left shortly before nightfall, hitting the French coast by dark.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
