Sgt. Alec Edwin Davies .     British Army 6th Btn. Highland Light Infantry   from Worcester

My father Alec Davies was an apprentice engineer at Heenan and Frouds in Worcester and served in the Home Guard as a young man. He was called up into the Highland Light Infantry, and after training in Scotland went into battle in October 1944. He landed in Zeebrugge on the first-steel hulled boat to enter after the port was cleared of mines. He then fought during 1944 and 1945, participating in the capture of Bremen.

After the war he returned to Worcester and worked at Heenan's for 43 years until his retirement. In his later years, he was voted 'Midlands Unsung Sporting Hero for 2015' in recognition of his work supporting his local cycling team 'Worcester Saint Johns'.

L/Sgt. Alfred Davies MM..     British Army Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment   from Horwich, Lancashire

Alfred Davies was born in 1920 and enlisted in the TA at Horwich and then the regular army whilst still only seventeen. He served with 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers regimental number 3d 50th in India, Iraq and North Africa. He won the Military Medal in June 1942 during the withdrawal from the Tobruk area. In August of the same year all but 19 of the survivors were transfered to the Kings Own Royal Regiment.

In November 1943 Sgt Davies was part of the ill-fated garrison occupying the island of Leros when it was invaded by an overwhelming forces of German infantry and paratroops. Other regiments involved included the Royal East Kents (Buffs) and the Royal Irish Fusiliers. After five days the garrison was forced to retire. Alfred was among the hundreds wounded and taken prisoner. He was treated at a German military hospital in Salonika and then taken by cattle truck to Austria and eventually to Stalag 357 Oerbke. He remained in captivity until April 1945.

(d.24th July 1942)

Alf Davies was the son of my great aunt Mary and her husband Alf. They lived in Whitley Bay in the 1950s. I was then too young to realize that the black and white picture of a man in RAF uniform was their son Alf who had died during the war. The picture of Alf in RAF uniform was always around in all my aunties` living rooms. He was much thought of by the family. He was in Wellingtons out of RAF Feltwell, Norfolk during WW2, until his death in July 1942. He is buried in West Terschelling General Cemetery in Holland.

He was awarded the Military Medal in San Salvo, Italy in November 1943 but following an accident before Cassino in March 1944 he spent 6 months or so in an American hospital (we don't know which one) before being discharged in April 1945 because of his injuries. Like many others, my father spoke nothing or little regarding the war and he died in 1980 and I then realised I should have asked him more.I have built up quite a lot of information since then but as he only spent a relatively short time in the R.A. and with the passage of time I have been unable to find anyone who knew him. Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
