Harold Davis .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps

Harold Davis was a POW and was one of many POWs who were on a train on 28 January 1944 having been evacuated in anticipation of the Allied advance. They had mainly come from Camp P.G. 54, Fara in Sabina, 35 kilometres to the north of Rome. The Orvieto North railway bridge at Allerona, Italy, became the site of the inadvertent bombing by the American 320th Bombardment Group. One of the men on the train, Richard Morris of the U.S. Army, wrote that the train was halted on the bridge over the river when the Allied bombs started to fall, and that the German guards fled the train, leaving the prisoners locked inside. Many escaped, Morris included, through holes in the boxcars caused by the bombing, and jumped into the river below. Historian Iris Origo wrote that 450 were killed when the cars ultimately tumbled into the river.

He survived the wreck with a slight calf wound and was sent to Stalag 344 Lamsdorf.

Joan Edith Davis .     Land Army   from Camden Town, NW1

(d.1943)

I have been doing a little study on my relatives and have discovered that my aunt Joan served in the land army in Dorset, she was at Muston Farm, she stayed at the W.L.A Hostel in Piddletrenthide, i have found out from a letter she sent to my grandmother that she had a friend called Rene who apparently was like a second mum to her and looked after her. Unfortunately i never met Joan she was killed on the farm in a tragic accident whereby a trailer being driven by the farmer skidded and crushed her to death when she fell from it. Another girl Irene Cordier jumped clear, now Irene could be ' Rene' as stated in her letter. Maybe someone may have known any of these names before,or heard about the accident via their grandparents or mothers, I would really love to know.

Joseph Conway Davis .     British Army Lancashire Fusiliers   from Greengate, Salford, Lancs.

My Dad Joseph Davis always referred to the 8th Army but that puzzles me when I try and trace him. I do not know his service number or how to find it with the limited details I have. He used to say that he swapped his clarinet for a rifle as he used play in a dance band before he joined up. He served on the 'front line' at Dunkirk and woke up one morning with shrapnel on his pillow.

I have all his medals and they are: Territorial George VI for efficient service, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal and another 1939-1945 medal embossed with a lion. I just wish I could find out his regiment/service no. Can anyone advise please?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
