F/Lt. Ronald Basil Daniel .     Royal Air Force 101 Squadron   from East Retford

(d.1st July 1944 )

Sgt. Thomas William Reynolds Daniel .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 78 Squadron (d.12th June 1943)

I never met Tom Daniel, he was my mother's cousin. His picture in his flying suit bearing the Welsh Dragon, lived on the wall in my Grandmothers sitting room adjacent to my mother's in her WREN uniform. He must have been exceptionally brave as he was a tail gunner. The family story says he volunteered for his final flight. I have visited his grave and those of all the crew of the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley in Eindhoven General Cemetery in the Netherlands.

WO. Tom "Danny" Daniel .     Royal Air Force 32 Squadron   from Rochdale, Lancashire

My father, Tom Daniel, joined the RAF on 10th August 1942 in Manchester. He was in Paignton for training before being sent on a troop ship to South Africa for flight training. He flew Tiger Moths and Harvards at Wonderboom but eventually went on to fly Hurricanes and Spitfires. He was sent to 32 Squadron and his Spitfire had the sign GZ-C. His commanding officer was George Silvester.

After spending time in Greece and Italy, he was sent to Ramat David in Palestine. He didn't much care for the duties there as he was told to fly over the sea and look out for Jewish refugee boats and report their position so they could be intercepted. From Palestine he was de-mobbed on 30th March 1946.

Dad is still with us but, unfortunately, suffers from dementia and remembers very little. I have made a "memory book" of photos from his life and in it there are some pictures from his days in the RAF. He also has a picture of Squadron Leader George Silvester's GZ-? on the wall of his room in the care home. Very rarely, he will look at the photos with me and suddenly remember something about one of them. It is always a lovely moment but very fleeting.

Spr. Dennis Eli "Danny" Daniels .     Royal Engineers 39 E+M Platoon   from Earls Barton, Northants

Although I have some photographs of my Dad, Dennis Daniels and other soldiers, I know very little about his war time. I have his army records although they are very difficult to understand. I do know that after the D Day landings he ended up in hospital with burst appendix. Also he had something to with Arnhem and the bridge, I think Bailey Bridges have been mentioned. As I mentioned earlier I do have pictures of him and some of his comrades that I would be willing to share. I would dearly love to know more of what he did in the war. Is there anyone who I could contact that could explain these records to me please, or anyone that was in the same regiment. Thank you.

Pte. Samuel Clifford Daniels .     British Army 147th (Bridge) Coy. Royal Army Service Corps   from Norwich, Norfolk

My grandfather, Samuel Daniels, served in the RASC and was called up quite late in his life. I have some pictures hanging on my wall of him in uniform when he passed out and what looks to be somewhere in Germany with his mates. I have a brass disc presented to him from XXX Corps Alamein - Cuxhaven 1944/1945. He drove the lorries that transported the best bridge in the world - the Bailey Bridge. He never talked about his time in the Army and I was a little too young to ask before he passed away. I'm sure he would have been proud to see me pass out as a Royal Engineer, Sapper a few years later and in my training I actually learned to build Bailey Bridge myself.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
