World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Andrew Ewing .     Royal Navy HMS Nigeria   from Newcastle on Tyne

My Father, Andy Ewing, served in HMS Nigeria throughout the war as an RDF operator, and conducted the operations described in the record on the site. I was intrigued to find reference to him by name and would be delighted to hear from or add to the records of any other surviving veterans or relatives.

Sadly, Dad took his photographic records from their time in Charleston to Charleston when he visited me in the USA. He struck up conversation with an individual while visiting the city who asked to make copies of the photographs for the Maritime Museum. A trusting soul, my father gave the photos to the individual who promised to meet him the following day. The result was inevitable, we never saw the photos again. They may be on show in the city somewhere but despite the efforts of the local Naval Association they have not been found. They depicted the ships company in and around the city and there were some excellent shots of her arriving and departing taken from the now dismantled Charleston Bridge, as well as those of Arctic Icing and Mediterranean operations. On a lighter note I know he would be pleased to see this record made by individuals and relatives and would have known many. and I am sure he would have much to add.

I have a precious copy of the HMS Nigeria magazine, dated 1946, edited by J W Aubrey, with sketches by Able Seaman John Smith and contributions (post VJ Day) from Reverend Anderson Nichol, the Church of Scotland Chaplain. The booklet contains photographs of the ship and the company which may be of interest to many. The Foreword is written by Captain H A King at the end of her commission in 1946 (I think). The 63 pages provide a topical record of the ship her characters and actions. The final page records the names of all those who lost there lives and will never be forgotten.

My father was proud of his association with the ship and the Royal Navy. If anyone would be able to preserve these mementos I would be delighted to hear from them.

F/Sgt. Arthur Colin Ewing .     Royal Canadian Air Force 405 Sqdn.   from New Brunswick

(d.3rd September 1942)

F/Sgt Arthur Colin Ewing, RCAF was killed in action on 3rd September 1942. He served in 405 Squadron and was based at Topcliffe. The other members of the crew were:

  • Keneth Ederic Michael Mitchell, RAFVR
  • Sgt Edward John Cutting, RAFVR
  • F/Sgt George William Roberts, RCAF
  • Sgt Edwin Charles Alfred Coules, RCAF
  • F/Sgt Lawrence David Hillier, RCAF
  • Sgt Alexander Douglas Muir, RCAF
  • F/Sgt Bernard Arthur McGrath, RCAF They are all buried in Hotton War Cemetery, Belgium.

  • Pte. Colin Ewing .     British Army 1/5th Btn. Sherwood Foresters

Colin Ewing was PoW No 15110 from August 1940 to June 1945. He was seriously affected by the trauma for the rest of his life, which made family life and life in general difficult for him and everyone at home. Colin would never talk about his experiences, making it hard for others to comprehend why he was affected so severely. As a very young man he had to go through this alone and unfortunately never received any help or support that we know of following his time in service.

Unfortunately this experience caused Colin to be quite distant and isolated with nightmares to deal with throughout reminding him of the horrors of war. He did enjoy his Grandchildren's visits later in life, always feeding them as much chocolate as he could while visiting. We are only now beginning to research and understand all of this.

Lovingly remembered by his daughter Margaret Elaine.

T5. Earl D "Bud" Ewing .     US Army C Coy. 43rd Engineer Construction Battalion   from Kannapolis, NC

A/Flt.Lt. Henry Kirk Ewing DFC..     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 90 Squadron

Harry Ewing was born in Pollokshields, Glasgow, in 1917. I understand he was the son of my paternal grandmother's brother, Raymond Ewing, of Helensburgh.

He enlisted in the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1939 and received an Acting Commission in 1941. He was a tail gunner. Family papers suggest he held the position of 'Gunnery Leader' at the time of his being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. At that time he was flying with 90(B) Squadron on Short Stirling bombers. Although no citation was published, the Glasgow Herald newspaper of 11 June 1943, announced, 'Scots Airmen Honoured.' His award was given for 'Gallantry in Air Operations.' It is well-known that over 120 crew from 90(B) Sqn were similarly decorated, along with many other honours. The action in question occurred during his second operation tour. He survived the War and was last known to be living (in 1968) in Breadsall, Derby. Sadly, I never had the pleasure of meeting him.

3rd Eng/Off. John A. "Big Johnny" Ewings .     Merchant Marine   from 24 Crawford St., Partrick, Glasgow, Scotland

I've been searching high and low looking for information about a merchant marine ship that apparently left New York City for Panama possibly in May of 1945. The vessel, according to a letter Mr. Ewings wrote my uncle, was called "the Imperial Transport." I've been trying to find out what happened to this ship and a particular third engineer officer who may have boarded it by the name of John A. Ewings of Glasgow. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have letters the survivors of his family may want to have, including love poems for his wife, Pearl.

My father, Bob Exley, flew in Lancaster ME631 and was shot down in April 1944 and spent the next year in various camps including Stalag Luft VI. He rarely talked about it, but one evening late in his life, I got him to tell me abut being shot down and parachuting into trees in the Black Forest. He talked about the silence once he had landed after all the noise, and then the sound of the Squadron returning home, a lonely feeling.

In 2011, my daughter and I went to the site of the crash, to meet with other relatives of the crew members, and also to a German chap who had collected pieces of the plane as a boy, fascinated by the stories of planes coming down near his village. It was an incredibly moving and somewhat healing experience.

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
