About
TEC4 Charles Stanley Easterly . United States Army from Gorham, Illinois
When Charles Easterly came back from the war he moved in and lived with my grandmother. She had lost a son on his way home in a freak accident. He would talk of his experience, mostly of catching dogs and eating them. He was a great man who taught me many things such as dancing, love of classical music especially of opera. Although he wasn't our uncle, we always called him uncle.
JB Eastham . British Army
JB Eastham served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Pte. Robert Eugene Eastin . United States Army from Rice County, Kansas
According to military sites I have found, Gene Eastin was first reported as a POW to the International Committee of the Red Cross on 23rd of January 1945. The last report was made 9th of June 1945. He was reportedly captured near Holtzwihr, France. These dates don't always match up. One site says that Stalag V-A was evacuated on 1st of April 1945.
I hope to be able to reconcile all of this information so I can share it with his daughter.
John Edward Eastman . Army Royal Signals
I am trying to find out about my late father John Edward Eastman who served in the Royal Corp Signals during the last war in Sudan/Cairo/Egypt. He was presumed dead for not sending any letters/correspondence for around 6 months. He may have had a breakdown! I would like to know more (if possible) about what he did, where he was and what he did. He never spoke about the war to me.

I have a few letters from a Lt. Ronald Eastman of the Royal Tank Regt, he was a prisoner in Oflag Vb. He corresponded with a calligraphy teacher in London and I believe he used to forge documents for prisoners to escape. I also have a photo showing 9 officers in the camp dated 8th August 1941. The names on the rear of the photo: Pat Cambell, Harrold Hopper, Hugh Mundy, Reed, David Ross, Patrick, Stan Hardy and the last one looks like, Robin Saele-Matiner.

Stanley Easton's service number 4465708 indicates he may have been with the 16th DLI from the early days, and probably joined up about mid 1940. My father was taken prisoner in North Africa probably at the Battle of Sedjenane where he was shipped to Italy and eventually ended up in Poland at Stalag 344. He talked of working in a steel manufacturing factory, and was also in visible contact with other prisoners, such as Slavs, Russians and Jews. Ted Eaton was involved with electronic counter measures. He was stationed at RAF North Creake and RAF Oakington.
Alfred Hamilton Eaton . Royal Navy
PO. Alfred Hamilton "Scouse" Eaton CdeG.. Royal Navy HMS Philoctetes from Liverpool
My father, Alfred Eaton, told me quite a bit about Freetown. He certainly mentioned HMS Philoctetes as one ship on which he served. What he thought of Freetown is pretty much summed up by impressions on similar sites of those who were there. One additional story was of crew having been invited to a party by a local chief 'King' Caulker. Plenty of food and drink and a good time had by all until a man from Grimsby named Rafferty shouted 'where are the women?' The party came to an abrupt end.
There is an interruption between ships on my Dad's service record, from 1941 to 1942 approx. This is accounted for, I believe, as the time that his minesweeper (name unknown) was torpedoed and sunk. He and one other reached shore and were detained by Vichy French forces. I do not know where, but conditions were bad and he was badly wounded with shrapnel. However, arrival of US forces saw surrender of the French in North Africa and my Dad's release and repatriation to a hospital in Scotland. One of his mates on this ship was from Lowestoft. I do not know his name except he was known as Yarboy.
Bert Eaton . British Army 6th Btn. Seaforth Highlanders from Earl Shilton, Leics.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
